: Timing problems...?

Put a new cam and heads on my 350 last week but now am running into a lotta problems I hope you all can help me with.

First time I fired her up I got a huge backfire through my new Holley. Spun the dist 180 to fix that. Second time I got some gas cominh through the top of the carb followed by a small fire. Floats were off, adjusted them.

Managed to get it to run for about 30 seconds the next day until a wiring problem killed the engine. Fixed that (sorta) only to find that it doesnt want to start anymore, starter grinds against the flywheel sometimes, got another small carb fire, and a few backfires.

Heres what Ive done so far

1) Re-adjusted the valves using the EO/IC method.....twice

2) Checked timing, timing was on

3) Adjusted floats in the carb.

So, the only thing left I can think of is the timing chain jumped a tooth somewhere along the line. Course thats a pain in the butt to do so I dont want to yank the cover if I dont have too.

Anyone have some ideas?

Well fixed some wiring problems, so now the starter doesnt grind but I still get the carb fire. Out of the secondaries.

Any clues?

It' possible the cam timing is out a tooth. That's not hard to do when assembling the timing set. It will run, but lack power, and backfire.
