I recently purchased a rebuilt 402 for my 70 El Camino. It is stock with the exception of a slightly aggressive cam. It has a GM HEI set-up and a stock Rochester Quad4. (the motor has about 400 miles on it).
It will not idle under 1000 -1250 rpms.
I need help?

Sg(name?),

I'll assume that the cam is not a REAL aggressive one so....

There could be a number of problems contributing to your symptom (fast idle is the symptom); timing too advanced, the carb may not be correctly adjusted, a vacuum leak. Have you had an opportunity to go through the basic troubleshooting techniques?

First place to start is checking for vacuum leaks. If there are none found then move onto the timing and then to carb adjustments. Keep in mind though that adjusting the timing will effect idle speed and carb adjustments will as well, so the two operations will actually be performed concurrently.

Let us know what you find.

Start by checking out the linkage also - I once had a gasket that was just slightly too small, and it kept the throttle blades open too far. If it's idling fast, it's getting air from somewhere.

Called the guy who sold me the motor...(understand I have limited motor knowledge...just enough to get in trouble)...the cam he put in turns out to be a CompCam with a 292degree duration and a .55 lift. Way too much for my needs. We're still trying to make it run...but I'll probably replace the cam. By the way, my name is Steve.
Thanks for the help.
