My neighbor has a stock 305 Chevy powered '40 Ford. For months it had a miss that defied all logic. Just showed up one day for no good reason. All ignition components temp replaced, diff carb tried, heads removed and inspected, rockers adjusted several times, etc. Finally in an act of deperation we loosened all the rockers to where there was some lash. The miss went away. This tells me that at least one lifter is stuck at full extension and won't bleed down. When adjusted normally at 1/2 turn past 0 lash it's holding the valve off the seat. I'm guessing the offending lifter(s) has a piece of dirt in it that is plugging an oil oriface and won't let the plunger compress. My neighbor wants to replace all the lifters with new on the old cam. I told him that stands a good chance of wiping out some cam lobes. I would narrow it down to the offending lifter, dissassemble it, and clean it. Anyone else have a similar problem with a hydraulic lifter?
