I have a q-jet that won't open the upper secondary butterfly which in turn wont't open the secondary metering pins. The linkage to dashpot is hooked up to the secondary butterfly and during idle it keeps it closed but during WOT will ot allow them to open. Any Ideas????

I have seen some Qs with a lockout for the air valve, earlier Caddy carbs I believe. I personally always remove the link rod to the air valve as it tends to slow the opening. Thats what I would do. You can always put it back later if you want.

Adjust the secondary air valve set screw by loosen the allen lock screw slowly while using a small flat head screwdriver to hold the set screw located on the rght side of the carb, the allen set screw is located under the air valve setting screw ( the one you hold with the the flat head screwdriver). Don't turn the screwdriver more than 1 1/4 turns in or you will break the air valve door spring, release the flat head screw about 1/4 turn, tighten the allen lock bolt, and drive the car, keep doing this until the secondarys open as desired. This is outlined in the service manual. Do not remove the lockout, it keeps the secondarys from opening while the choke is on, just make sure that when the engine fully warmed up the lockout isn't hanging up which may require you it clean it with carb cleaner until it moves freely. Have fun and you will have a blast when your secondarys kick in.

You also want to make sure the choke is opening all they way, because the secondaries will be locked out until it is completely open. Just drive the car for a while to get it good and warm, then pop the air cleaner lid and see if the choke is completely open.
