Hey guys, maybe some one can help, I am looking at a car with a big block in it. I want the motor, i drove the car runs great on idle but when you step on the load pedal it starts making a popping sound other than that the motor runs well. Thanks Ralph.

It's coming from the engine I assume? It could be that the timing doesn't have enough initial advance, or the accelerator pump could be shot. Either one will cause this. Does it pop once or twice and then recover, or does it sound like a continuous series of backfires and pops?

Exhaust valve not opening due to flat cam, bad/broken lifter, broken push rod, broken rocker stud etc.

Hold up!! Check the basics first. That's why I mentioned the timing and accelerator pump. You don't want to go to all the trouble of pulling the cam if the problem is just a weak accelerator pump in the carb or a bad vacuum leak.

My 396 pops at any cruising rpm. Sounds crisp in neutral, and runs strong and quiet under load, but once I let it cruise it drives me crazy!
