1970 Chevelle used to have a three speed on the column but somebody put in a tilt steering column and it has significant lateral play, if anybody knows of a fix or part replacment I would like to be able to fix it

This is relatively common. The fix is to tighten 3 or 4 screws inside the column, under the horn & turn signal assembly. I did it a few years ago and it was a pain. Do a search (top of this page) for "loose column" , someone posted very detailed instructions. You may need to look in several different forums to find the info. The info is also in a CHilton or Haynes repair manual and the Chassis service manual from chevrolet.

I found this: http://www.chevelles.com/forum/Forum29/HTML/002555.html in the Chevelle Tech 2000 forum.
