: Need help with Temp Gauge
kkokko Jan 1st, 09, 12:16 PM Happy New Year to all!!
I have been working on my 1967 Chevelle SS 396 clone car and have been having problems with the new Temp gauge that I Installed. I put in a factory repo that I bought from Year one in a SS gauge kit that included the Bat/fuel and the Oil/Temp ralley gauges. I have all of them working except the temp. I installed the sending unit that came with the kit, but as soon as I hook up the wire to the sending unit, it pegs the gauge.
I ran a normal size 12ga copper wire from the sending unit side of the gauge to the connector on the sending unit. I also have power to the positive side of the gauge.
My books do not tell me anything for troubleshooting, so I am hoping that there is a expert on this site that will have some insight on my issue.
Thanks for you help in advance.
Regards,
Kevan
Xtreme70SS396 Jan 1st, 09, 1:57 PM Do you know if there is supposed to be a resistor between the contact points on the gauge?
kkokko Jan 1st, 09, 4:57 PM I do not know if there is supposed to be one. Sorry.

Xtreme70SS396 Jan 1st, 09, 5:18 PM How many posts on the back - 2 or 4? If 4, I think you need a resistor. If 2, probably not.
Is the metal back of the gauge grounded? Might want to use a wire to see if that works, too.
kkokko Jan 1st, 09, 7:19 PM Mark,
There are 3 posts on this repo gauge. One for the sending unit, one for Power, and one for the ground. I tried to ground the gauge directly to body ground and it made no difference. The directions for installing the gauges did not talk about adding a resistor(Not that the directions were all that well.)
I also tried to ground out the sending unit wire and it does the same exact thing. I checked the Ohm reeding on a cold engine thru the sensor and it reads 4 to 5 ohms between the wire hook up tab and the block. not sure if that is a correct reading.
I also notice that in some of my manuals that do talk about this option package, it looks like there was 2 wires coming to the factory gauge that had a "V" shaped conector that hooked onto two spade terminals. I do not have that wiring harness in the car since it was a malibu stock dash and I also do not have the spade terminals on the back of the gauge.
I hope this brand new sending unit is not the problem. I did not use any tape or thread sealant when I installed it.
Thanks for the help
Elree Colby Jan 1st, 09, 7:44 PM I don't know who supplies Year One's gauge conversions. Shift Works (http://www.shiftworks.com)has a conversion kit and may be the supplier of Year Ones kits. Here's a Shift Works trouble shooting guide for their 66,67 gauge kit. (http://www.shiftworks.com/Gauges-document.pdf) It's a PDF file.
kkokko Jan 1st, 09, 7:57 PM Elree,
Thanks so much for this troubleshooting guide. This is the kit that I installed. It looks like I have no ground from what it says. Not sure how that is possible with the tests I have done, But I will go and check it out again.

Kevan
hpsherlin Feb 11th, 09, 3:03 PM Kevin, I hope you figured it out.
Question of the same type. My Shiftworks temp gauge reads about 3/4 of the way to the top after running for awhile. I stopped at a shop yesterday after driving about 20 miles and the gauge read about 3/4 up.
This friend had one of those wireless temp reader pointers and at the thermostat housing on the intake it read 175 degrees. My sending unit is in the front of the intake by the water neck.
According to the guide, it should only read a little over a 1/4 of the way up.
Engine does not overheat.
Is it the wrong temp sending unit? doing this?
My other gauges work fine and perfect except the oil pressure gauge goes all the way to the top. At the bottom when turned off and when I crank the engine it slowly works the needle up until it is maxed out. I assume this is due to high oil pressure on this new engine.
Anyway, what do you all think about the temp gauge reading like it does?
Didn't want to start a new post when this one was of the same problem.....maybe I should have.
Thanks
hpsherlin Feb 12th, 09, 1:55 PM AC Delco #G1852 1/2" and for smaller than 1/2" - #2258 for future reference for people.
LOL- reason mechanical oil pressure gauge is maxed out? There is a sending unit on the block and then the copper line to the gauge. Sending unit is for dummy light only from what I have read. I will remove the sending unit and put the line straight to the block and see what happens.
ChevJerico Dec 28th, 10, 3:49 PM Just searching the archive. local auto parts can't find the 2258 number. Is that a good number?
