i have a 650 dbl pumper on a small block, with an auto choke. when the car sits overnight or longer, when i pump it to set the choke and start. it always quits 2 or 3 times before it stays running. was told it could be fuel leaking back into the intake anyone have any ideas. thanks.

This could be one of two things. Either the choke pull-off is not working, or the fast idle speed is too low. The choke pull-off is a small vacuum cannister that partially pulls the choke plate open as soon as the engine fires off so that the engine has enough air for combustion. On most carbs, the cannister is mounted on the passenger's side of the carb.

Use a hand held vacuum pump, or pull the air cleaner lid and have someone start the engine while you watch the choke operation. When the choke is set, it should be closed all the way. Once the engine fires off, you should see it pull open about 1/8th to a 1/4th inch. Of course, this is done when the engine is stone cold.
