Im gonna be assembling my 468 . I have a TH400 that I plan to use that is basically bone stock. Its been sitting now for about 10 years with fluids in it, but before storage it was behind exact motor I am building in a stock vehicle that was never beat but used as a daily driver.

Ive never attempted to use an old trans. I had planned on sending it to a trans shop for a performance rebuild. After reading many threads where people put a salvage yard trans in with a shift kit I figured manybe I should try this thing out without a rebuild. If it fails its just my time and effort to pull it and send it out. Before installation I planned on installing a shift kit, new seals and a new 3000 stall torque converter etc.

Any suggestions on this? Yes or no? Is the old fluid corrosive and I shouldnt waste my time?

Again Ive never done anything like this or ever even installed a used trans. any insight is appretiated.

If it has been sealed up good, I would just change the filter and check for any moisture in it, and then if there is no rust or moisture, installed the filter, input and output seals, and a new pan gasket and run with it.

It is possible the seals couldbe hardened but they harden more from heat than sitting, so with the clutches having been presoaked from prior use, it should be fine asuming no moisture.

Thanks. Something I wanted to hear. I will replace any seals and go over everthing to check for rust and if OK I will replace all fluid, install shift kit, new converter etc as of course filter and gasket and give it a shot.

I just did as Jake said. Trans sat for almost 30 years. First I pulled the pan. Nothing out of norm was found so a new filter and pan gasket were installed along with the input/output seals. The trans works fine.
