On my 69 with a 350 I have a problem. I was getting on the freeway, accelerated down the ramp feeling good, the transmission takes longer than usual to shift(turbo 350) but does, get on freeway look in rearview mirror there is smoke pouring out the back!! Pull of at next exit get out and see dark fluid coming out the dust shield covering the flywheel, get in get it back home trailing puddles of fluid. The tranny is slipping, doesn't have reverse, smells like burning transmission fluid. Go to work look at it tonight, transmission reads on stick, but oil doesn't. Take of dust cover find hole in the bottom of it with a large nut sitting in it. Find out that is from the torgue convertor to flywheel bolt. One is missing. SOOO my question where do I go from here? Can burning oil smell like burning transmission fluid and would leaking oil make the transmission not work? Any ideas, thoughts, tips are welcome. Thanks

Did the trans fluid on the trans dipstick look burnt? Smell burnt? Was it a nice red color or kind of an icky brown?
I thought that there are BOLTS that hold the converter to the flexplate. Typo? There ought to be 6 of them, kind of a thin head with 6 slashes across the head of the bolt.
Do you have an oil pressure gauge? Did i lose pressure?
I'm thinking loose converter knocked out the rear main seal in the engine if the trans is OK. Weird that it didn't shift though.

Or a wobbly, loose converter damaged the tranny front pump AND the engine rear main seal. Given your description, it's the only thing that makes sense.

Oh, this sounds like fun!! The transmission fluid is a nice yucky brown color and smells awful. There was supposed to be three bolts holding the convertor on, two were loose and one was missing. There is a after market pressure guage in the car from what I remember it was low but not zero. But I wouldn't trust the thing. It jumps around everytime I tap on it http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif Is ther any semi easy way to test for these things while I have it on the stands?
Jumping ahead, would a front pump be included in a standard tranny rebuild? What should I ask the shop when I ask about their service? and is a shift kit a good idea for a daily driver type application? And another question for the fun of it, can the rear seal be replaced with the engine in the car?
Thanks for the replies. Sorry about all the questions but this has gone beyond my usual take it apart look at it, replace something easy type repair that I do!! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Go with a shift kit, but be sure to get one for milder street applications. You can buy and install kits that shift so hard they will break parts in a transmission that has not been modified to take the extra abuse. You don't need that on a car like yours.
Front pumps are not part of a standard rebuild. It will cost extra, but be sure to mention this problem to the mechanic so he can carefully inspect the pump.
The rear seal can be replaced with the engine in the car according to some people, but getting the pan off is a major pain. You will actually be better off pulling the engine.
