I was talking with my dad the other night and told him I had recently bought the 72 Chevelle. I remember when I was probably 5 or 6 we had a blue 70 SS chevelle, but never knew the story behind it. So this was back in 78-79 when he purchased it. I grew up in Southwest Michigan to set the scene. So the story goes he was headed out fishing one day when he drove past a yard sale and spotted the Chevelle sitting in the garage. He stopped in to look around the yard sale and get closer look at the prize in the garage, when the lady who lived there stepped outside. He said she could tell he was eyeing the car, probably the only real reason he stopped, she asked him how much he would pay for it. She told him to take a good look at it, she didn't really know much about it, it was her soon to be ex-hubby's car. He poped the hood, looked around she gave him the keys and he started it up. He offered her $800 and she said she would go get the title. So he left went to the bank and had a buddy drop him back off. He said it had headers, some kind of lumpy cam, duals and was fast as all hell. I remember him firing it up taking it out in front of our house(lived out in the sticks) and smoking the tires up and down the road. Well, he got divorced from his second wife about a year later and she kept it... Kharma!!! :(

I wish you could still find deals like that.

it truly used to be that simple. when i was a kid, my dad would save some $, then throw my brother and i in the car and go "shopping", we'd literally drive around town and look for cars that needed to be sold.

one weekend we found a 58 ford in "salmon" and a 56 buick special, red with a white top. the ford was i think $110, and the buick was $140. back then $30 was a lot of $.

my dad was a ford man, but me and my brother thougt "salmom: was way to close to pink, and we screamed and yelled until dad bought the buick, just to shut us up. it was a beautiful car, and we saved another $20 and went to the swap meet and bought chrome rims for it. we loved that car.

one day, a little bitty guy knocked on the door. he didn't look old enough to drive, no less big enough, i was about ten, and he wasn't much bigger than i. he made a bunch of noise about wanting to buy our car, so to get rid of him, my dad asked what was then, a ridiculas amount of $ ($2,000), and i'll be damned if he didn't show up with the $.

we saw him driving that thing for years, couldn't barely see over the steering wheel, but he drove it everywhere. $2k back then was a lot of $ and my father was able to buy several very nice rides with that $, a fire engine red 55 chevy, a beautiful 59 ford truck that took us weeks to swap the tranny out, and a 60 chevy panel wagon he used for work.....i still miss that buick.
