My '71 malibu developed a new noise a few weeks ago which I have been pondering for the last few days. When have had it parked and am backing out and turning, I hear a "Pop" from the front end.

I have come up with two possible problems.

1) Coil spring - maybe it isn't seated well and is popping into place

2) Sway bar is is lose and is slapping the underside of the car as the weight shifts (rain for the past few days has kept me from crawling under to have a peek).

Suggestions?

Worn upper or lower control arm bushings shifting when you put it in reverse. This is fairly common, and if this is the problem, you have to remove the control arms to replace the bushings. It would be an ideal time to check the ball joints and tie-rod ends. Don't forget to get the front end realigned when you're done.

Mine did this when the bushing fell out of the upper control arm. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/eek.gif

It scared the crap outta me when I realized what was happening.
