I had something happen to me last night that scared the hell out of me. I was getting on the highway and the throttle briefly stuck open. I was able to just kick it down and it seemed alright after that. On the way home I kept wondering if this would happen again or not, so I headed to a long open road with nobody around and stepped on it....sure enough it stuck open...only this time it didn't kick down...so I went to put it into neutral ( automatic on the column )and I actually bumped it into reverse! The wheels locked up and I started to slide...luckily I got it into neutral pretty quick and straightened it out. It kicked back down and I made it home in one piece. It was late and I was still a little shakey...so I just parked it and went inside and had a beer to calm down. So..after listening to my long horror story....my question is...what should I be looking for to solve this? It only seemed to happen when I hit WOT...otherwise it feels fine. Thanks for listening.

Check the end of the throttle cable where it hooks through the bracket on the intake, before it hooks up to the carb linkage. Sometimes the plastic sheathing cracks apart and splinters allowing the cable to "hangup" on WOT. Only solution is to change the cable. One of many things I've had happen through the years! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/eek.gif

You also might want to remove the throttle cable from the carb, and use your hand to move the throttle on the carb. Make sure the throttle shafts and/or blades are not sticking. Do this with the air cleaner both on and off to make sure it is not interfering with anything. What about the return spring? Is there one on there? Is it strong enough? How old is the cable? New ones are cheap.
That's a few things to check.

I think I might have figured it out. It looks like the small copper line going to my oil gauge fell down a little and I think the pedal was getting caught up on that. I checked all the linkage at the carb...both with and without the air cleaner on, and everything moved freely.I went to a big empty parking lot and opened the hood and revved it to WOT and I couldn't get it to stick. Then I got in and stomped on it and it stuck the first time...and that's when I saw the copper tubing had moved. I just got back from a drive and everything seems alright now. Thanks for all the replies.

I had it happen once too - for me, it depended where/how I had the return spring located on the carb linkage. What was happening: at WOT the point where the spring connected to the linkage was going past center or to the other side of the pivot point center (over centering) and actually wanting to keep the linkage at WOT. Please check this...good luck.
