I know a guy that has complete disc brake set off a 72 Lemans - he wants $150. Is this a good deal even though rotors are shot and the calipers will need to be replaced. By the time it's all said and done, I could have between $350 & $400 in a set of factory brakes. For the money, would I be better off upgrading to bigger brakes?
It's going in a 70 Chevelle with a mild 454. Ideally, I would love to do big brakes with tubular arms; but I could go with this set up to start ( since it's cheaper ) and get it to the point where I can drive and then later save up for the good stuff. I may have just answered my own question - any other thoughts?
Thanks,
Eric

Two years ago I paid $250, but the calipers were good too. It also came with booster, proportioning valve and master cylinder. I bought new rotors from Rockauto and caliper rebuild kits, new hoses and pads. Including the used parts; about $425 for everything. This is a great brake set up. Factory discs were pretty good and sturdy.
This should be the minimum set up for all Chevelles except bone stock show cars.

If your getting everything you need it's a good deal. Any rebuild kits or rotors you may need should cost less than the whole setup did.

By the time you put that money into a used set you could be close to buying this:

I just bought this one (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=170280906561#ebayphotohosting) for $269 (I didn't get the slotted rotors though)

haven't installed anything yet, but looks to be ok. I just need to pick up the new master cyl and power booster from NAPA. I think it is around $130 for the pair

Thanks for the input guys. I've seen those setups on ebay before - the shipping brings the price back up so I may just go ahead and get the used ones here. I've heard you have to be careful with the aftermarket spindles breaking. I think I saw where the Air Ride Chevelle given away at the Goodguys event broke an aftermarket spindle.
