It comes off the positive battery cable on a 72' Chevelle. I think you can see in the picture that it is cracked and if you pull the crack apart you can see wires inside of it. It is also dumping out the white powdered acid. Do I need this? And if so what does it do and where can I find a replacement? Is it a fusible link? Thanks for any help.

It is not a fusible link but it is the power wire from the battery and goes to the horn relay? Regardless, you need to replace the battery cable for sure. So, I would disconnect the battery and then head to the starter to remove the cable, pull it out and measure it and head to the parts joint for the replacement.

Others will correct me if I am wrong about where the wire goes, if it was fusible, it wouldn't have a fuse in it.

It looks like a Posi-Lock wire connector ( http://www.posi-lock.com/posilock.html ) was used to join the wires together. I definitely agree with Mike that you need to replace the cable.

Where does the red wire go to? I'm gonna guess it goes to the horn relay on the firewall?

I will trace the red wire tomorrow and post up where it goes. I will also pick up a new cable. Thanks for the info

I can't see anything wrong with the battery cable itself
(except it should be red)
I'm guessing it's going to something that was added on since the horn relay on the firewall is fed from a fusible link coming from the big post on the starter on a 72.

I would just cut it off and re-connect it with a line fuse.

Thats what I was thinking, Dean, but if the fuseable link took a dump, this might be a fix for it....

(Besides that fact it looks pretty wimpy? I like bigger RED cables to carry the juice....)

Its certainly a posi-lock connector. That cable looks like a newer style cable end with an extra lead on it for computer controled vehicles. Someone probably took that wire and wired it to a circuit that needed a B+ source.

I have the basicly same sent up on my El camino. The wire connects to a junction block(single post) on my radiator support. The ohter wires go to the horn relay and the alternator. the wire that goes to the alternator splits and runs to the firewall. The wire continues to the ignition switch. I put a 20 amp fuse holder there and use it to make a cheep total kill switch. I pull the fuse and everything is dead. My 66 Elcamino harness is completely original and not cut or spliced. It is not a fusable link according to the factory assembly manual for the 1964 thru 1967 Chevelle.

I traced it and it goes to the 12V side of my MSD6AL. I'm going to go ahead a get a new bigger red cable for the positive battery cable.

Now that we know where it is going I think I can just cut it off and re-connect it, but do I need a fusable link in it?

Thanks for all the help!!

72 doesn't get power the same as 71 and older, like Dean said

All power feed circuits should be fused according to wire size.
You want the fuse to blow before the wire starts to overheat in the event of any overload.

Got the MSD6AL instructions?

No I don't have instructions for the MSD6AL.
I do have instructions for a MSD7AL.

Looks to me like a common old "butt splice". . . . . cut it off, strip the wire back til you find "good" wire, and re-crimp a new one on it. . . .. It's not a fuselink. . .
