View Full Version : Anyone try cutting a Hotchkis spring ?
sfsvettes Dec 15th, 08, 2:29 PM I put the 1" drop hotchkis springs on my 69 along with the complete front end rebuild. As you might have guessed , my front end came up around 2"
higher than it was to begin with. I was thinking of cutting a round out to
see if would work. ???
Any ideas., ? I replaced one factory spindle when I did the rebuild.
Ouch
ss1970chev454 Dec 15th, 08, 3:28 PM give it alittle time to settle. It will drop. On my 70 I waited for 6 months, it dropped 0.5" Not enough for my taste. I ended up cutting a half coil out.
My 68 dropped overnight, so much so, it ended up lower than my 70 :(. This was without cutting.
With both cars parked side by side, you can see the 68 sits noticable lower.
I think Hotchkis has some quality control issues when it comes to their steel vendors.
You can do a search, this has been discussed many times.
good luck
cs40racing Dec 15th, 08, 4:39 PM I was going to cut my front Hotchkis springs on my 72', decided the springs were worth more intact than cut (and didn't want to deal with installing, pulling out, cutting, installing, etc.. the trial and error thing isn't for me), I am putting in 2" drop spindles and moog replacement springs, hopefully it'll give me the height I want.
fj68malibu Dec 15th, 08, 8:05 PM I cut a half coil from my 68's Hotchkis springs. It was perfect, then in about 3 months, they settled a bit, and now the car sits just a bit lower than I'd prefer. I'd give it some time to see where the car settles, then proceed.
sfsvettes Dec 15th, 08, 9:26 PM Thanks for the info...I thought about the drop spindles , but I understood that you had to use a different rotor / caliper set up via the CPP stuff ?
I have just put all new stuff on mine as well as one new spindle.
I hate to have to toss it all for the drop spindles. It just sits way too high now
sfsvettes Dec 15th, 08, 9:28 PM Sharp looking 70.. I love the red & black
Thanks for the insight

I got the SSBC drop spindles (early christmas gift!), they supposedly work with OEM 11" rotors and single piston calipers and most aftermarket OEM style brake systems. I have a kit I got from MattsClassicBowties (could have gotten the drop spindles at that time ARGH!)... so i'm hoping it all works, my springs come in tomorrow, assuming the weather stays dry (although cold at about 24F right now) i'll be slapping those spindles on this coming weekend...
sfsvettes Dec 16th, 08, 10:01 AM Cool , Please let me know if all your stuff bolts up & fits..
I'll wait to hear how it works out before I do anything
Good luck with it and let me know
Thanlks:thumbsup:

ss1970chev454 Dec 16th, 08, 11:23 AM I guess I could see how the red would get old :D
What's that steering wheel out of?
sfsvettes Dec 16th, 08, 12:12 PM It is a 78 -82 corvette style wheel.
Bolts right up to almost everything corvette wise from 63-82 I think
I've used a few of them over the years
I love the red though..Never gets old to me...
:beers:I guess I could see how the red would get old :D
