Hi,

I need some help with the repair of my power convertible top system. A shop repaired it so they say, but it has never worked well.

Anyway, I have a friend who is helping me try to fix it now and we have some questions.

It is a 1966, so originally I believe it had brake fluid in the system. The repair shop changed it to ATF Dextron III. They only changed the hoses. Will the ATF hurt the other components, like cylinders, pump motor??? At this time, it is leaking fluid from somewhere.

Should we stay with the ATF or go back to brake fluid???? Back in the September / October 1996 Vol 1 - No 5 of Chevelle World, Chuck Hanson used brake fluid in his 66.

We may have to replace the hoses again, cylinders, and re-build the pump, but before we replace all of these parts I wanted to find out what fluid should be installed in the system.

I've always heard to use ATF. One problem with using brake fluid would be if it leaks, that stuff'll kill your paint.

Nice 66 Jim. My Dad had one identical except for the wood wheel.

Where do you put in the fluid? My top hasn't worked for years (see the electirical and wiring thread) and I never have known how to check the fluid.
