Hey guys, my first post here and Im looking at buying a 72 Chevelle which has always been my dream car. I came across an ad on craigslist which the guy had a few other cars like this he was selling off. Just for kicks, I called him up and asked what he wanted for his 72. 1500$!!! I was not expecting it to be this cheap. I asked him a little about it and am supposed to go look at it later today or later this week. He doesnt know too much about it, I guess he just bought it and didnt do anything with it, however he seems like he knows what its worth since he has a built 69 camaro and 2 70 chevelles.

What I know about it:

4.56 12 bolt rear end
No engine/tranny (not hard, we have like 30 laying around)
Had a V8 originally
No interior (not sure of the extent, says theres still dash, column, etc)
Floor area is ok, trunk was 'redone' but he says itll still need work
Quarter panel was patched behind rear wheel with sheet metal
Has all glass
No paint, body is in primer
Has some new parts inside like headers, bumpers, etc but he cant remember all that is there
He said it is NOT an SS
Couldnt remember if it used to be an auto or stick, but thinks it was auto
Has all wheels and tires, its a 'roller'

He hasnt actually seen the car for a while as its parked at his buddys house. I dont care if its SS, or auto or stick, and my plans would be to make it a nice driver and fix it up as I go.

Going by what he is telling me and can remember about it, would this be worth the 1500$? I am going to bring my camera and a vin decoding sheet to find out more about it. Thanks!!

Hello and welcome Nick. From what you described, yes it is worth $1,500.
Make sure it has a clear title in his name.

Thanks for the reply! It does have a clear title in his name.

Are there any things I should look out for, both things that usually are broken/bad/missing, or that would make the car more rare? (packages, options, etc?)

If the 12 bolt rear is original it would be rare.

Check the trim tag for original color codes and trim.

I would be checking, closely, what is under the primer.
Check around the front and back glass areas for rust or bondo or...
Check in the trunk for any signs of quarter panel repairs, floor repairs etc.
Check under the carpet and under the floor pans.
Check the cowl area, especially near the bottom.

Sounds like a fair deal for $1,500. Im sure for the price you will find some minor surprises under some spots of the primer, lower fenders, quarters, trunk pan, trunk seal.Check the floorboards, cowl, bottom of doors, etc. Keep us posted.

The optional gear ratio in 70 was 4.11 IIRC
stock ratio was 3.31, posi optional
I think early cars, L-78 had 3.55
Believe the 3.07 cog was std on Elky 12-bolts

$1500 for a body with a 12-bolt posi? Unless there is a tree growing up through the floorpans, pretty good deal indeed.

Sounds like a decent deal. If it's a real good deal it might not be around later in the week.... you snooze you lose. I'd go check it out

Thanks for all the info guys!! I couldnt get ahold of him Saturday, so I will try again tomorrow. From what it sounds like, Im the only one whos actually called on any of them.

Is the 12 bolt guaranteed posi, or will it maybe/maybe not have this?

jack the rearend up at the pumpkin and spin one tire the other should move in the same direction this will tell you if it is a posi. or pull the rear cover.
