I recently did a tune up on my chevelle, i replaced the spark plugs, wires and distributer. I took it for a drive after and it ran so much nicer than before. it then rested for about 20 min. then when i drove back it was back firing in the carbuerator every time i accelerated and it wasnt idiling nice anymore. Any ideas on why it ran fine on the way there then like that on the way back? I made sure the wires and all that were still hooked in right.

gotjolt, is there any possibility that you took the car to a do-it-yourself car wash and sprayed off the engine at the end of the first drive? This problem sounds just like a situation where the car is exposed to some amount of moisture and the resulting condensation while cooling causes water to collect inside the distributor cap, causing misfire. Maybe a VERY detailed run-down of what you drove through or where the car sat for twenty minutes before the drive back would help.

it sat outside a movie theater, no water or anything. It hasnt just started backfiring after the tuneup, it does other times too, i think i need to adjust the carb and timing. You will have to excuse me, i dont know a whole lot about cars =(

here`s two things that i always do wrong, cross one or two wires and push them on tight.
