I pulled the driver's side valve cover tonight but the only things cast in the head appear to be PASS, E247, and GM4T. Where is the "casting number" that I am looking for? Also, please see the attached photo....is that hole in the middle of the head normal???

Thanks,

Stephen

They're oval port heads, casting number is on one of the runners.

Look on the middle intake runner, there should be some numbers there, like 3964291, or 353049, 3993820, 3933148, etc.....

Well, both head casting number are 3917215....67-68...oval..CLOSED..396, 427, 101cc chamber

So, are these low compression, low performance heads? I have a 69 JQ Block (265 HP 2bbl/powerglide). I almost feel like this is just a "throw an engine together so it works" type engine.

Good set of heads.

Decent cam, intake and carb will wake that bad boy up..

Well, I've got the XE262H Xtreme Energy Cam and that Professional Products intake. Sounds like all of my potential is in the timing. Also, how come these heads don't have the provision for a temp sender? Should they?

Please consider putting the VooDoo 262 in her instead!

It will do fine at 9.5 to 1 CR, imho...

And so will the VooDoo 268 by me.

What do the Voodoo cams have to offer vs. the comp cam? I'm new to this fun...and expensive hobby!

UDHarold created them to have better closing ramps so they are quieter and since they are designed by Harold, imho SOTA!!

Better to run it in the inake to get a true reading of the coolant before going to radiator. Heads induce higher readings.

After the 215 head casting came the 063. The 063 head and all later ones have a hole in the side of the head for a temp sender. All of the closed chamber heads work great if your goal is high compression.....seems someone removed the 148 112cc heads off your engine, put the 101cc 215 heads on...to make more compression....with both engines having the same small dome piston, CR bumped from 9:1 to 10:1 (rated 10.25:1 factory combo but they seldom spec out to full CR if measured. The 265 engine also featured a VERY MILD CAM and a 2 Bl carb...worst of everything...
So, having 215 heads already is a plus....

FourEightyNine BrIan has an even older set on his low 10-sec Chevelle....

Stephen , Harold Brookshire AKA UD Harold is a cam designer & a member here. All the voo doo cams are his. Alot of his cams will make more power and over a wider rpm range than a shelf cam.
There are a few others here that also do custom cams. Look around here & the performance section..... you will find lots of info. The cam in my sig. was specd to run in a 10:1 combo using those heads. Pulls just enough vaccum for pb booster.

I ran a Comp XE262H in a small block 350 and loved it. Based on feedback I have seen on this website, Voo Doo cams in big block Chevys seem to be very finicky about valve springs.

I could be wrong, but are you talking about Lunati listing the wrong part # for the correct springs on there website ? Just wondering. I have not heard of the troubles with BBC

Yes that is correct. Lunati originally had either the wrong springs listed, or someone in R&D didn't recommend the correct springs. This mainly has to do with the 60204 and 60205 voodoo series. It originally called for Part #73815 springs which allowed valve float at the 5200 - 5500 rpm range and now they have changed the recommended springs.
