I had the same problem with my 64, It was the neutral safety switch. With all the safety switches going bad on the 64's I expect GM to have a recall any day now. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

You guys crack me up.
To make me look even dumber... I troubleshooted everything tore stuff apart etc etc etc only to realize someone knocked the shifter into drive! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/redface.gif So really, nothing was wrong with the car and I wasted 2 days trying to figure out what was going wrong.(battery, starter, wiring, connections, connectors etc etc urked me because most of the stuff was new from the motor swap and I couldnt figure out what was wrong. Consult with Tommy(Hot66ss) on aol tells me hey neutral saftey switch might be out, put it in neutral and try to start it. Hey guess what! Its in flippin drive! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/redface.gif

Reminds me of when I worked as a mechanic. I went on a road call with the wrecker to jump start a car for a lady. When I got there and tried to start it, it didn't make a sound. I looked down at the shifter and it was in drive!

Sure glad I caught that one quick. I can see how embarassing it could be. The lady sure was! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/redface.gif

I had the same problem with my 64, Just removed the two purp wires from the neutral safety switch, Hold them togeather with your left hand, Turn the key with your right ann the car will start when you forget and leave it in drive.

Steve, I would start with the Neutral safety switch, then maybe check your grounds (that's an electrical favorite).

To make it easier the next time you can connect them to a switch on the dash board.
