i have a 70 with 427 out of 66 vette with 4 speed m-21 the car starts to shake at 2000 rpm if i push in the clutch it quits it does it worse in 4th gear it seems i have receits from engine rebuild and it was balanced i havnt pushed it hard past the shaking point the clutch seems to be erratic in pressure and travel could clutch do this maybe out of balance

had the same problem years ago in a 68 chevelle found the problem with the pilot bearing I replaced it and the shakes were gone

I am not too sure. Things I would check: U-joints, rear trans mount (pilot bearing is a good one too) and clutch linkage.

Sounds like the clutch. The springs in the clutch plate can break/fall-out causing balance problems. If you remove the clutch, do like blazer91 suggested and check the pilot-shaft bushing. Good luck.
