I found this old boat near the mouth of the Columbia River in the dunes. It had some Japanease writing on it. This engine was in the front of it, this is the only other pic I have. It was a real windy day so we hung out inside it and drank some beers. Its all open top, made of wood and covered in thin fiberglass. About 25 feet long. Maybe a lifeboat?
I dont know why the engine was in the front.....guesses?

Looks like it was two cylinders of fury. If you messed with that I hope your tetanus shot is up to date:) Cool shot overlooking the bridge.

that would look great in my Healey

a double ender like that is usually some kind of tender for larger vessels, or a work vessel that needs maneuverability and /or seaworthiness, or a lifeboat. Looks like it has a pretty high freeboard, probably intended for fairly rough water. Hard to say more without more pictures.

I don't know Andy ........... its too clean to put in your Healey ...... better throw some salt on it for a year or so before installing ;)

not being much of a sea going person ..... BUT I did stay at a best western once ;)

they had National Geo channel .... an pretty much anything that the Japanese made was for Whaling !!! a motor in the front sounds like a good way to haul in the harpoon line ;)

So it didn't have a propeller shaft? That would be a dead giveaway.

now that I think about it, it didnt. Of course, this thing had about 2 feet of sand in the bottom and was surrounded by driftwood galore...

If you were near the boat when you took this pic, is it possible it was Noahs ark and the motor was up front because all the weight of the animals was in the back???

Is it a 2-71 Detroit?

It doesn't look like the 2-71's I used to work on.

was it under water or is that just from the salt air?

It's the other, less well known, 'mystery motor'. Inline 2 cylinder big block, a real torque monster I hear.

Is it a 2-71 Detroit?

Definitely not a 2-71 Detroit Diesel, they use three rockers per cylinder.Plus other major differences, sleeve design, blower, etc.
