Selling my camaro soon but I am putting the engine together first and ill have some fun with it for awhile.

I need some advice. The engine is a smog 454. I purchased 049s fresh from the machine shop with 2.19/1.88 valves. I was told it CCed at 118.
I'm leaving the bottom end as is and popping those on there.

Any Ideas on what my compression ratio will be?

Other than that I just need a cam recomendation.
I'm thinking solid flat tappet.
Car weighs 3,400
3.55 rear turbo 400 with new stock stall.
Power Brakes
Performer RPM and 750 double pumper
Headers
I'll probably get some roller rockers, even 1.8s maybe, any benefits from that like more lift from a lower RPM cam?

I'd like to go as radical as I can without making it unstreetable for resale. its a 69. I guess I wouldn't want to rev past 6000 with my virgin bottom

I think thats all the info you would need. I really appreciate any feed back.

You say smog 454, so I'm guessing flat top pistons. That with the 049's will put you at about 8 to 1 compression. A Comp 282S would be plenty of fun until you sell it.

Just out of curiosity how would this cam work?

Cam Style:Hydraulic flat tappet
Basic Operating RPM Range:2,500-6,500
Intake Duration at 050 inch Lift:232
Exhaust Duration at 050 inch Lift:237
Duration at 050 inch Lift:232 int./237 exh.
Advertised Intake Duration:280
Advertised Exhaust Duration:288
Advertised Duration:280 int./288 exh.
Intake Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio:0.547 in.
Exhaust Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio:0.547 in.
Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio:0.547 int./0.547 exh. lift
Lobe Separation (degrees):114

Its a comp turbo grind... Would this be better with my low compression ratio. The lobe seperation being 114 and all. What would that first suggested cam want to rev to?
What would this want to rev to?
Hope im not being a pain i am very curious about this stuff

Jared,

You may want to call a few cam companies for their advice.

What is the gear ratio?
So you want a go-fast cam and you have minimal compression.....
IF you had 9.5:1 compression, I'd say you have it going on, the cam would make power to 5800 rpm or so, even 9:1 CR. But I'm afraid 8:1 give or take won't like that cam.
"454Regal" runs mid 12s in his 454, much like yours, uses a tiny cam with 214/214* dur@.050. Short duration brings the power in early....really helps a low CR engine. Thing is, at or before 5000rpm, the cam is done dealing...."454Regal" shifts at 5000rpms.

I have 8.8:1 CR, I use 226/226*, I'll be done dealing before 5400rpm.

The BBC street mechanical cam had 242/242* dur @ .050" good for over 6500 rpm in a 396/402 but a 454 would run out just at 6000, maybe 6200
So your proposed 232/237* cam won't get up that high....5700 maybe

ok sorry to beat a dead horse. Some things have changed. Im just going to go with a hydraulic flat tappet. Also my dad is stealing my 750 and giving me an 850 because its too much carb for his 400.
The heads i have came with dual Valve springs good for .630 lift. I dont want to change them. Ive been told to go with a cam with .590 lift and that that would work with the springs i have and my 8 to 1 ish compression. Most cams are a bit radical in that range I feel. So im thinking of going with...

COMP Cams Xtreme Marine Camshafts - XM 278H-12 (234/244/112)
or
COMP Cams Xtreme Energy 4x4 Camshafts - X4 278H (234/244/111)

with 1.8 rockers lift would be about .597/.600 on these

I know more compression would be ideal but i also dont think this engine will be too soggy on the bottom or unstreetable... i like the marine one from what ive researched. But i value your opinions

sorry if im being redundant

thanks,

jared
