My 70SS396 has a 5500rpm tach with white numerals....just wondering if this is correct. After seeing a previous post it got me to thinking.

I beleive on the earlier post they were talking about a ls6 tach which would go up to 6500 in 1970 but a 396 would probably only be a 5500 which is what you have

That's what I'm thinking Gumball. Though it would still be nice to hear from someone with
a 70 SS396........

My 72 SS 402 (396) has a 5500 rpm redline. I beleive all of the hydualis lifter big blocks got 5500 rpm redline in 70-72, and the solid lifter (375 hp) 396 got 6000 rpm and the LS6 got 6500.

There are documented cases of cars being equipped with the wrong tach. The general rule is L34 and LS5 had 5500 redlines, and the L78and LS6 shared the 6500 redlines. HOWEVER, my 70 LS5 car had a 5000 redline, and the cluster was correct for the car. The tach number matched the build sheet, so I know this was original.
Also, fo '70 only, the numerals had a greenish tint to them. Compare them to something white, and see if they're really white, or a greenish white.
