: Partially Finished - WIW
Indyspecracer Dec 9th, 08, 11:31 PM Comes with a lot of parts, needs engine and tranny, original color is red. If the work has been done well so far, I am thinking that this might be an opportunity to build a mild resto-mod for a reasonable amount of money. What do you guys think?

69396ss Dec 10th, 08, 12:09 AM If you want a builder, I'd be looking at this one.

Assuming the paint and body work is decent, I bet you could build a half way decent 454 M-22 car out of this for low $20K's. Buy a 454HO for 5K and an M-22 for $2K and your only up to $13K and what the 69 costs without a drive train. Even if the body and paint needs to be gone over it would still be hard to loose on it. (need a Cowl Hood anyway so paint it whatever color you want)
And a 1970 454 M-22 Clone will pull decent money when finished if done right. Far more than a 69 Clone.
I can't believe somebody hasn't hit the buy it now yet.
(I'm sure they will soon) :)
Bowtie70ss Dec 10th, 08, 12:27 AM Yeah the 2nd one is a better year too.
69396ss Dec 10th, 08, 12:36 AM I could make some money on that car.
If I didn't have a Corvette tore apart in my garage I'd build it.
I'm guessing Indyspecracer is looking to end up with a pretty high caliber car. The '69 sounds like it was done right so far and has the potential to have the restoration completed into a show quality car. Price probably in-line (maybe a tad high) with what has been done so far and parts included but must be verified in person. On the other hand (sorry to disagree John) the '70 is already off to a bad start with non-original paint color and obviously wrong stripe shape. The body work and paint quality isn't known but for that price I'd bet not the greatest. Floor patched up. Sounds like it needs to be taken apart and started over to be a really nice car. May be a good deal for a budget cruiser but I think he's looking to end up with something better than this can be.
69396ss Dec 10th, 08, 7:27 AM Your allowed to disagree Von. ;)
And yes, I meant that car as an under $25K finished product. Absolutely needing additional body work, and re-going through the "black everything" chassis.
But not too many freshly done 454 M-22 cars out there under $25K.
The only thing with 69's is a NOM car won't pull what a 70 NOM car will when finished. (Generally speaking) Especially if your building a "resto-Mod" as he stated.
I'm not sure I'd throw alot of money at a high end Resto-Mod. I'd personnally either go a "base horse" numbers car, or a high end, "high Horse" nut and bolt Correct Clone.
A triple Black 69 L78 or LS6 done to the "9"s
Better Yet, find a convertible and nut and bolt that.
What ever happened to that Red, #'s, 70 you were suppossed to look at?
Indyspecracer Dec 10th, 08, 8:55 AM On the red 70SS - Von's advice to do my due dilligence paid off, lets just say that I have reservations about the car's authenticity.
On this car, I kind of like the idea of not even pretending to re-create an SS if I have no docs. It seems a bit liberating to not have to worry about everything being exact. I was thinking about this car in dusk blue, white stripe, parchment interior, TQ wheels, Tremec-5 and either a period correct 396 or a 502 crate. I was thinking about offering 12K. Thoughts?
ss1970chev454 Dec 10th, 08, 9:22 AM if the pic of the trunk is up to date, there appears to be more work required there. Some kind of partial patch against the RT inner WW.

Well the beauty of it is you can do whatever turns your crank.
And that would certainly be a neat car.
The only other advice I can give is that when you say "high caliber show car", that means different things to different people.
When you get out on the show field, even the local show field and compete, you'll find that to be competetive, that no bolt can be left unturned. That attention to detail takes on a whole new meaning, right down to shiney lugs on brand new wires, no painted over bolts, flawless trim and chrome, and on and on and on.
In other words, $50K for a high quality show car is not only unrealistic, it's almost minimum.
It's real easy to get upside down in these cars when every bolt is freshly plated, every wire is crisp and new, and no detail, no matter how small is left untouched.
You may say to yourself it dosen't matter, that I'll keep the car forever, but that's really seldom the case.
A 502 5 speed Chevelle sounds neat, but the reality of that is that it's a Custom car, and custom cars limit the amount of potential buyers, don't fair as well on the show field and subsequently don't pull the higher dollars.
You can get into a situation where your $20K upside down in a car if your not careful.
Especially buying $7K crate motors.
My point is, if you really want a Custom 502 Chevelle, you are so much better off buying one thats already done you can't even imagine.
But everyone has an opinion, and the bottom line is to do what you want to do.
If you just have to build one you just have to build one.
Which car is right for you all boils down to what you want, and how you want to enjoy the car.
If it's to compete on the show circuit with a high caliber car, or just experience the build and enjoy it with your family.
All good points. I just didn't get a good vibe from looking at the ad for the '70.
RoyalPlum67SS Dec 10th, 08, 10:10 AM Well, if it were me I would definitley pass on the 70 and go for the 69 out of those two. If the 70 looks that rough in the pictures, I'm sure it looks alot rougher in person and is sure to be a money pit. The 69 looks to have alot more potential with the same money spent. If I were in the market for a 69 I would be all over this car if its still available.

69396ss Dec 10th, 08, 5:33 PM Gotta agree with that one.
It's tough though really. Pictures just don't tell the story good enough on any of these cars.
It's really all speculation until you crawl underneath them.
Somebody hit the buy it now on that 70. I knew that would happen.
OK, who here bought it? :)
Bunz-T Dec 10th, 08, 7:24 PM I would think someone who sold one of the nicest chevelles in the country and replaced it with a Vette should have his ability to pass judgement revoked. He has proven to be not very bright.:D
69396ss Dec 10th, 08, 9:25 PM Now, Now. This is going to be a neat little small block.
Engine builder's making a 383 stroker out of her. He's estimating 425HP all while maintaining the numbers matching heads, intake and carb. An Aluminum Flywheel to wind her up quick, it's going to be a fun little car.
That Chevelle was a $60K cash cow.
Now I can Clone bash and have $20K in the bank to boot. :D
Didn't you have a real nice 69 project John?
mr 4 speed Dec 10th, 08, 9:39 PM Buy a 454HO for 5K
I can and have built quite a few 454's for about $2500 that would spank the snot out of a 454 HO and not have any oil consumption issues to boot. The 454 build like the one in my car has made 490 HP and 530 ft/lbs TQ at the flywheel on a dyno and runs 12.5 @ 108 MPH with 3.31 gears crossing the stripe at 5000 and the HP peak is at 5700
car is still pulling like a freight train from hell with 700 more rpm on the table when it crosses the stripe. Don't need no stinking $5600 454 HO :)
My build has 8 years and 16,000 miles on it and doesn't use a bit of oil too I might add
It also does awesome 40 MPH rolling burnouts
69396ss Dec 10th, 08, 10:06 PM Ya, that 454HO didn't get very good ratings did it.
I just threw that out there.
Damn Gear heads. :D
mr 4 speed Dec 10th, 08, 10:34 PM I gotta say John..the 454 HO on paper isn't a bad motor..and its performance is decent..the big issue is its overpriced and has oil consumption issues. Not exactly something to feel good about when you put your hard earned dollars out, especially at $5600
IMHO and experience, the original XAA suffix LS6 crate motors where a hard running motor and a great value for the money. The LS7's where too..but the compression was quite a bit for street use.
hot rod bill Dec 12th, 08, 7:31 PM INDYSPECRACER, THAT 69 PROJECT CAR IN PRIMER WOULD BE THE CAR OF CHOICE AS THAT WOULD GIVE YOU ALOT OF IDEA'S AS TO WHAT YOU WOULD WANT AS A RETRO RIDE[ bbc, sm blk, auto, standerd]. THAT 70 THAT WAS POSTED LOOKED LIKE A MACCO JOB. AS FOR THE 69 IN PRIMER THAT GIVES YOU A BETTER CHOICE FOR COLOR FOR WHAT YOU WANT,SILVER LOOKS GOOD ON 69 WITH BLK STRIP DOWN THE SIDE:thumbsup:.THESE CARS[CHEVELLE,CORVETTE,ETC] WILL ALWAYS BE A MONEY PIT BUT IF CAREFUL YOU CAN BUILD A GOOD DRIVING CAR & HAVE FUN SHOWING THE CAR AT THE SAME TIME:beers:. MY .02 WORTH. BILL
Bunz-T Dec 12th, 08, 7:53 PM Ask him about the 69 SS project , original Cortez silver, that he is close to buying. It is $8k further down the road than the one listed for the same money. With 4 speed and A/C. David is only a few days away from owning one of the best values out there.
hot rod bill Dec 12th, 08, 8:02 PM bunz-t, i did'nt know about that one, cool:thumbsup:, silver 69 chevelles looks sharp with the stripe down the side along with the ss wheels & goodyear polyglass tires. i don't think anybody would give him any grief over that car:noway:. david do you have any pictures of this one your looking at? bill
Indyspecracer Dec 14th, 08, 9:55 PM Bill,
I have a few pics that John sent, but I don't think I can figure out how to post them given that they are embedded in the body of an email rather than a seperate attachment. I'm headed to Tx with a truck and enclosed trailer late in the week. I will snap some pics when I get back and post them.
I agree with your point of view on Cortez Silver 69's, good color. I actually wanted something different than Red or Black, so it's nice that the original color of the car is something that I like.
Bunz-T Dec 15th, 08, 6:14 AM At the bottom of the thread you will see a couple of pics of the engine. He can do better when he gets it home. As you see he is coming to look/buy my car.
