My 72 will be running great down the road when all of a sudden it feels like someone has shutoff the key and the car stops running abruptly (no sputtering. Gen light comes on and all dash lights remain on when this happens. I can then immediately restart the car and it will run for awhile then it does the same thing again.
I have plenty of fuel in my glass inline fuel filter, a newer carb that runs great and the car shuts off so abruptly- no sputtering- it feels like some sort of an electrical problem. It appears to be temperature related too as on a cool day or night it wont do it. I replaced the ignition coil today and it still does it !! I have an hei distributor conversion kit called an ignitor that I am suspecting next. Is the ignition system fused somehow !!! Is there a possible intermittent fuse I need to look for ? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated !!!! Thanks John

Check your electrical wires to the starter (runs down the passenger side of the firewall, behind the exhaust manifold and to the starter solenoid) and see if you might have a short that goes bad when it gets hot. Big blocks don't have much room for the starter wires and you may have a lead getting hot, building resistance and going out.

Also suspect is your HEI control module - if you got a bad one that heats up, it will shut off. See if you can swap one out from another car temporarily & see if your problem goes away.

my guess would be the control module.

I had the same problem on a new 66 ss. It was like someone reached over and shut the car off, it drove me nuts. Turned out at the factory they installed starter wire in such a way it was shorting out on the frame or firewall. WALT

Check out the ignition switch. It's mounted down on the lower end of the steering column up on the top side of the tube. It could be going bad, or it simply may need adjusting. It's mounted with two screws, but the mounting holes are slotted. Try this: Start the car and with it in park and idling, SLOWLY turn the key towards the off position. If it barely takes any movement to shut the car off, then it's likely the switch is out of adjustment and the car is shutting off whenever you hit a bump. Mine does this very same thing. I've jst been too lazy to get under there and adjust it. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif (Actually, I'm installing a floor shift column soon!)

I had the same problem and as Randy Mosier said the ignition switch, that was my problem. The kays would just move around while driving and move the switch and shut it down. Try moving your ignition key while it is running. if it shuts down then change the switch
