I am looking to buy my first paint gun and do not want to spend over $200. I'm getting ready to do my frame on a 67 chevelle with epoxy primer and plan on using it to also paint my suspension parts and to spray on body primer. I'm new to this and do not need a gun to lay down a 10 thousand dollar paint job. I need some advice on HVLP or siphon and what size tip for a good all purpose gun for mostly primer that may even be able to put a fair paint job on my old truck whenever my car is done. I have thought about this one from northern tool it is HVLP with 1.4 and 2.0 tips. http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200343665_20034366

Believe it or not i have 20.00 hvlp I bought from Harbor freight tools that does a nice job. For what you are doing you don't really need to spend over 60.00 for a good Hvlp gun. Especially if you are priming with it, as primer is one of the hardest things on a paint gun. Check out harborfreight.com. I got mine there on special for 19.99. I have even painted a front clip of car with mine and it did a better job than my sharpe paint gun. Shawn

Whatever you decide, remember HVLP is all about volume of air not pressure. Make sure your compressor is up to the task and then some. About the time you get 3/4 way around that car with your primer it's gonna come out like pancake syrup is yu run low on air. Lessons I've learned, keep your nice flexible 3/8" hose short, no longer than fourty feet if possible, those descicant filters at the gun murder your airflow, I just try to get rid of the moisure before it reaches my motorgaurd toilet paper filter. HVLP guns work best with the hi flow fittings like those from Prevost etc. I like my Astro guns, the Evo uses less air than the QUL but I sure like the 1.5 qul for all priming except poly, just isn't big enough , you can reduce the 2k and move slow and do alright with the 1.5 but I think a 1.7 or 8 would be perfect unreduced, I'm talkin a splash of reducer here to get it on the car when it's 95 deg. and about 11% humidity like most of our summer days here. Don't go to cheap on your paint guns. Remember a gallon of 2k w/ hardener is gonna set you back at least 65 bucks and you can spend over 200 if you want. Just wait till you price basecoat.

One other thing I forgot, check the material data sheets for the products you plan on using, it will tell yu everything you need to apply the products. Another lesson learned, don't count on the guys at the paint store for very much info. I haven't met one yet that has did much painting. You can always call the tech lines for the product to get help. Hope something I typed can be of some help. L.T.

I ended up with a binks 7 from EBAY with a variety of nozzles and spare parts. looks hardly used. Has 33, 36, and 38 air and fluid nozzles. Came with pressurized cup and regulator. I have about 100 bucks in the the entire setup. I am having a problem with this that I need help with. There is a plastic tube with a check valve that comes off the regulator to the the top of the cup supposedly to keep it pressurized. With this tube in place the gun shoots a solid stream of paint from the center of the nozzle when I depress the trigger. If I unhook the tube from the top of the cup it will spray a nice pattern as it should. Keep in mind I have never painted before and I have a friend that paints some but has never used a gun with a pressurized cup. What is the purpose? and would i just be better off to remove the regulator assembly. You can see in the link below what I'm talking about, but the tube is not connected to the cup in the picture.

Anyone have any experience with the pressurized cup on the Bink 7. Im thinking I should just do away with it completely. I also bought what looks to be a very old binks 7 gun at the flea market this weekend for parts, but is says THOR no 7 on the handle, but manufactured by binks.

A pressure guage at the gun is nice, not a must for primer. I have IR for primer from Lowes $60-$70. Check eastwood for a mid-high range for a finish gun.

ive only used 3 different brands of guns; $600 sata 3000 rp digital, $100 astro and $12 harbor freight. dont let ANYBODY tell you that you that they are the "same". can a novice achieve the same results? maybe. but the good guns really are easier to spray. the atomization and fan of the sata is amazing. the astro really isnt that far behind. but the harbor freight gun sprays like a $12 gun. i have 4 of them and use them for all of my woodworking projects; shooting dyes, stains, lacquers, urethanes....... they work perfect for that, but i wouldnt use it for anything other than sanded primers on the chevelle.

if you want a good gun and you dont want to spend the money, then the astro is the way to go!!!!!
