I've finally figured it out and have come to the conclusion noted below :clonk:   :secret:

Here are just a few items in this Restoration Corner I have commented on in the last month or so:

- 69 Air Filter (square or diamond mesh).
- 69 Master Cylinder Cover (proper wording).
- 69 Grill (Silver or Black fins).
- 69 Temperature Sending Unit (What is correct wire connection).
- 69 Air Filter (What is correct wording).

I don't think any of the above discussions came to any specific concensus.

CONCLUSION
The GM Engineers decided to make different types, made at different suppliers, at different parts of the Country, for supplying different Assembly Plants. WHY? - because they knew there would be a bunch of old gearheads trying to figure out all this crap forty years later and they just wanted to screw with our heads

That's my story and I'm sticking to it

I'm not sure that's correct. Lets post a poll to see what everyone thinks! LOL! :D

BTW, I still haven't got an air filter for my 72, because my head exploded from the different info contained in said post... :o

I don't think it was the engineers.

I think it was regular guys trying to get cars out the door, using whatever they could to do it.

Being an Engineer (electrical) and an old one at that, I really never did anything to "screw with our heads". Actually, this is all quite exciting for ME. Being the original owner and trying to put it all back together as close to original as I can afford after 40 years of aftermarket parts is almost as good as sex (almost). Even my wife has finally understand my passion (she only wishes is was directed towards her). Don, if it wasn't for guys like you and Ark68SS and Bill Rose and alss and many, many more this forum would not exist and I would be restoring my car with AUTOZONE parts. Everyone on this forum is making a huge contribution to "restoring chevelles".

I'm with Don:thumbsup:. That way I can blame any of my restoration inaccuracies on this thread. I'm going with the modern attitude of " it's not my fault "!:D

Don,now thats funny(LOL!!!)

You have done a great job researching this stuff and its just as i thought that you found it seems at times with these 35-40+ yr old cars you cant always nail down whats exactly correct.

That's because just like you said they/GM did things a little different here and there from plant to plant depending on what was going on that the time esp when ot comes to suppliers just like you stated.

It may not have been brought up in the past month or so, but another item that appears to have no real consensus for the 69's is the power steering cap....plastic or metal

Hey, lets not blame the engineers(hits a little close to home, just teasin) but its the person purchasing those parts that usually wants to cut costs and not do what the engineers spec'd. Your right, I do like to mess with people so you could be 100% right. Alright your explaination is most likely right.
