: quadrajet stuck wide open!
wolfehunter Mar 25th, 02, 3:23 PM Please share if this has ever happened to you but my secondaries got stuck in the open position when I got on her!! I shifted from 1st to 2nd without a problem and then put my foot to the floor. As I shifted from 2nd to 3rd the engine started to rev briefly until it caught third. I was approaching a turn and got off the throttle but she was screaming even though the pedal came back up off the floor! I pushed in the clutch as I panicked and as the rpm's started to climb into the red I shut her down. When I took off the air cleaner, all my ports were wide open! I manually worked the throttle and when I opened it all the way and left it snap back, they went shut. I sprayed everything with carb cleaner but is there anything else that would make this happen? I'm very nervous about getting into the throttle again so hard as I don't want a repeat. Did I mention I tried braking the car to a stall but she just pushed me?!
Sorry so long but it scared the $hit out of me!

wolfehunter Mar 25th, 02, 3:42 PM Speedster,
I have driven the car a few times since this happened and everything seems fine including the return spring so maybe it was all a fluke but I can share with you that it was quite an experience, especially with the wife in the seat beside me screaming, "what are you doing?!!!"
Thanks for the reply. Maybe it just was gummy from sitting over winter? Hope it never happens again.

That is a very weird feeling when the throttle sticks on ya, isn't it? Had that happen to me once when I decided my linkage was too loose on the carb and it should be tight instead.LOL
Xtreme70SS396 Mar 26th, 02, 1:22 PM This happened to me once, on a buick. Scary as hell for the first few milliseconds before you think of your options. Never did figure out what happened, and it never happened again.
I'm assuming something got in the way, because I could work the throttle from inside the car and it freed itself up right away.

Now that it's fixed, go and clean that brown stain off of the seats http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

kevin d Mar 27th, 02, 6:57 AM How much clearance is there betwwen your air cleaner and your linkage? I tested an air cleaner on my 72 before starting the car and found that it hung up on the cleaner (after market, don't remember the brand.) It would not have been good to go for a ride and find I could not decellerate! Just a thought.....

Honey, its not a $200 hat. The distributor was $200, the hat came with it. kevin d
