Greetings from snowy Toronto Canada.

I recently purchased a 1970 SS El Camino, LS5 454, M22, 3:31 Posi. As you might expect with the El Camino, it is a tad light in the rear and the rear end is all over the road, wheel hop etc out of 1st.

Any recomendations on rear end setups/adjustments that would help improve traction (ladder bars, traction bars, springs, shocks.....).

Thanks Dave (ACES 8042) .

I really enjoy this technical forum.

The wheel hop isnt necasarily due to light weight, its actually the rearend moving around under the car in the bushings, etc.

Best bet:
Rebuild rear suspension with urethane bushings, and add gas shocks as well. Upgrading your rear swaybar may help a little, but you really need to do the front suspension as well to keep it all working together as a package.

Good luck!

Hello and welcome Dave. Try your question in the Suspension section.

Also, if your rear end is Jacked-Up above the normal height, it will add to the wheel hopping.

Common misconception but the El Camino is actually heavier on the rear wheels than a 2 door Chevelle.

As to hop biggest factor in my experience is rear ride height. Many El Caminos have cargo springs and such. When your lower control arms start to have an angle with the ground you get wheel hop. Lower the rear so those arms are parallel to the ground and it will go away.
