: GHigh Pressure side of power steering problem
lev8trmn Dec 7th, 08, 4:17 PM I have a new type 2 (Corvette style) power steering pump set up on my belt and pully system. I thought everything was OK with no leaks. I turned the wheel several times abnd thing were still looking good. I went to back her out of the garage, turned the wheel all the way then she sprayed power steering fluid all over the place fron the high pressure hose/fitting. I purchased a power steering plumbing kit (braided stainless) from Summit. It has the teflon hose for the high pressure side. I redid the fittings several times and even had some spare hose. BUT every time (3) it would not hold the pressure and spray at the fittings.
How much pressure is on this line? Is the teflon line a POS? Any other option or suggestions?
There is a local place in town that makes high pressure hose set ups. I was thinking on bringing them my needs and see if they can make something up for me.
socalwrench Dec 21st, 08, 12:32 PM all of the high pressure lines I've known, have crimped on fittings (somewhat like AC lines) because of the high pressure.
the fittings seems to the problem, not the line. teflon hose, by itself, it rather strong. I have used in on diesel trucks with even higher pressures.
sometimes, the original or replacement lines are the best.
Xtreme70SS396 Dec 21st, 08, 12:39 PM I've got the power steering stainless hose and fittings on mine, AGR high-pressure pump and gearbox, no leaks.
I think the problem is likely how you've connected the hose to the fitting, make sure the hose is pushed all the way in before tightening. Other possibility is that there is debris in the fitting to the pump, not making a real good seal.
Once it's coming out, it can be difficult to see where it's coming from, too - might be right from the gearbox at the adapter, too.
lev8trmn Dec 21st, 08, 4:18 PM I rectified the high pressure hose leak by getting a company locally to make one up for me. They used a machine to crimp the ends properly. I tried 4 times and it still blew out. I'm probably doing something wrong. Since, I've developed another leak in the upper shaft seal of the gear box itself. Now I'm looking into rebuilding or replacing. Any ideas? Thanks Bob
Xtreme70SS396 Dec 21st, 08, 6:06 PM The pump and gearbox are kind of like a matched set - if you got a high-pressure pump put on an older-style gearbox, that *might* be part of the problem. I would think the hose, etc would be OK, though - I've gotta think that something might not be right with your gearbox?

I'm looking into having Power Steering Services rebuild it for me and upgrade it to a quick ratio while I'm at it.

mwd24 Oct 23rd, 10, 11:03 AM I went through the same issues with this line kit. It leaked in a few different areas. I ended up getting a replacement kit and the second time I hooked it all up it worked fine. This kit is very hard to seal at the fittings.
Rick Hart Oct 30th, 10, 11:42 AM I have experienced a similar issue with a new after matket pump. Power stearing fluid spraying from the HP fitting area on the pump.
After some lengthy diagnosis (trial and error). I had to finally remove the pump and get it on the bench under good light. I found that the hex-head in the pump was slightly loose. I tightened that hex-head and cured my issue. As long as you didn't destroy or damage the gasket, that my be your issue.
Best of luck,
