: choppy acceleration at high rpm

Im having a rather small problem. When I floor the car at rpms above 4500, the engine starts to hesitate and accelerate very choppy. I am running an aftermarket Carter pump that runs at 6psi to a 600cfm edelbrock carb. I checked the float level and timing are fine. I thought it was either feul starvation or ignition. I replaced all the HEI dist. components except the pickup, problem still persists. The carb is not way lean or rich- Im almost positive. I way thinking eitehr feul sock, or filter, or secondary metering rod stepup springs. Let me know what you guys think. Is there anyway to check to see if there is any air getting into the feul system (could that cause it)? The car runs great at all rpms except when FLOORED above 4500rpm. It almost feels like someones pulling me from behind. Help. INFO: 350 400hp, 2.56 gears 10 bolt, th350 tranny.

One thing that you could do would be to mount a fuel gage outside the passenger compartment in such a way as to allow you or a passenger to monitor it while driving. Take 'er up to 5,000 WOT and see what your fuel pressure is THERE.

I'm having the same problem, car acts like the secondarys aren't working and just kinda falling over. Fuel pressure?
Too much advance? Anyway I'd be intrested if amyone else is had this type of concern with these Edelbrock carbs, one thing for sure mine is rich at idle no matter what the idle mixture screws are set at.

I have had the same problem and if your carb
checks out ok I would lean toward dist, coil,
plug wires or volts.Take your dist cap off
and take a good look inside your dist and
check your cap as well.Just spent alot of time
going thru this, come to find out my brand new
dist was crap.If you have any msd stuff look
at it as well.

UPDATE: ran my chevelle today hard. WOT all the way to above 6000rpm in fisrt gear. Car ran great with no choppy acceleration. All I changed was the feul filter! It was filth after only 3 weeks of use! I guess with an electric pump you have to change the filter more frequently. Anyway, the engine only misfired twice at 6200 rpm, I think because of the stock module. I hear they start to givce out at 6000 rpm. I might put in a MSD module down the line to cure this. Thanks for the help guys. :)

If you follow Ignition Man's advice, the problem with those HEI dist is the coil mounted inside the dist cap. His advice is to use a remote mounted coil and not one of those supposed "High Performance" coils, just a plain, oil filled. You have to use an adapter that fits on your HEI cap to do the conversion.
