This is an update to my previous thread: Wheels/Tires Staggered or Even? (http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=248106)

I was searching for a wheel solution that was affordable, can fit C5 brakes and has a good tire selection. I ended up getting a set of 17x9 5" BS Cragar Soft 8's. Tires are Nitto 555 255/45 17 front and Nitto 555R 275/40 17 rear. I also sanded and rattle canned the roof the other day so the car was closer to one color. The wheels really have me thinking about working on the body. I only got a few miles on them today. I will report back with traction/handling info.

Here's a picture I took the other day:

I have under $750 into this setup. Now I'm gathering parts for the C5 brakes.

What do those wheels cost? I can get used 17" tires all day long at work.

I can't help but like the setup its really the ultimate in functionality and in doing so looks cool as well. Probably lighter than some of the aluminum wheels out there also.

I've been thinking about a set of those for some R-compounds for track days... :)

Wheels are $75 each.

They are actually pretty heavy @ ~37# each. I'm not sure if the D window ones are lighter, but they were $30 more each so I chose these. Considering traction wasn't available I can handle a little more weight.

I haven't gotten any of the C5 parts yet. I am starting that process now.

Only problem is the tire selection. As we talked about before a 275 isn't ideal on a 9" wide wheel and 275/40 is the only R compound size in 17. At least in the R888/555 RII variants. I haven't really looked into non DOT at all.

Very nice. I almost bought those wheels as well.

I have seen a member stuff Z51 brakes in those wheels. He has to grind the stiffening ribs on the caliper though.

I have seen several brake setups in the vette classified for not much $$:

I'm not going to be as harsh as the last guy b/c to each their own. I'm not a big fan of those wheels in particular on cars, mainly b/c they're so similar to what the truck guys run (particulary jeeps) and I had a pair on my jeep. However, that's not to say that black wheels can't look cool and for the amount invested, your set up is kinda hard to beat, especially if on a budget. I would take some black paint to the wheel weights though.

I personally like the look of the weights and stick on weights suck for actually getting a tire in balance. This car is purely function over fashion.

Reminds me of stock car:

Why do you say this? Or are you speaking for track use it isn't ideal?

I have always run a 275/40/17 on my 17X9 front wheels on my 96 Cobra. I run a 315/35/17 on the 10.5 rear wheels.

BTW, I like the stock car look but with the bigger wheel, and smaller sidewall.

Didn't think we are discussing Cobra's here. Thought it was a 69 Chevelle or did I miss something?

Calm down guys.

Wheel and tire selection is important on anything that takes wheels and tires. He was just referencing one of his rides. And it's a '71 BTW.

From the other forum and searching on the web I found that running a narrower tire has quicker response and better turn in performance. Some guys are even running 275's on a 11" wheel to kill the sidewall squirm. Food for thought.

Also the 4th gen Pontiac WS6 and Camaro SS run a 17x9 w/ 275/40 stock, but the C5 Z06 Corvette runs a 17x9.5 w/ a 265/40 17.

I love the direction you are going with your car. The NASCAR theme is awesome. Please keep us posted on your progress.

Work fine...can add big brakes...dont break the bank.

I think those wheels look pretty good. The 40 series tires also are a good choice. :beers:

Car looks great with those! I have the 15" soft8's and the only reason I didn't pick them up in the 17" version was the weight, they are some heavy mofo's. My 17's two piece aluminum centerlines weigh in at 24Lbs a piece without tires so weight is def. a noticable difference(I wanted the lighter wheel since i've only got a 307 and don't plan to go larger than a 350 in the future).
