Having a problem starting the Chevelle(small block) the problem is the engine cranks real good for 3or4 turns then gas sprays out of the carb. The only work I did to it was change the spark plugs and removed the wires from the HEI dist. to do a little cleaning around the dist.Could I have the firing order messed up when I put the wires back?I know the firing order should be 18436572 How do I locate #1 plug on the dist.? Thanks Paul

It's the left front most thing on the dist. (At 110 o'clock).

Paul,

Before you do anything else, make sure you still have the power wires and the signal wires attached to the cap / coil. I've forgotten to put the power connector back on mine once or twice.

An easy way to check to see if you have the wires in the correct spot on the dist. cap is to turn the engine to TDC on the timing marks , then pop off the cap. The rotor should be inline with either the number 1 or number 6 cylinder. That will make sure you are not "one off" on your wire placement.

Hope it helps,
Bill
