View Full Version : Does this sound right
Mollyalexis Feb 19th, 02, 10:51 PM Here is my problem. My car is driving me crazy. When I come off the freeway and onto the exit, when I come to a stop it dies on me, (especially if I'm going down hill) and sometimes does not want to do into drive afterwards. Its an automatic and it usually starts right up again afterwards, but when I put it in drive, it dies again. So then I have to put my foot on the break and the gas at the same time to rev it up, then put it in drive and it will go. Its so emabarrasing. If I slow down on the freeway also, it wants to die. Sometimes just at normal stop signs too. We have put money into it, and had lots of suggestions on what it could be. The last suggestion sounded good. COuld it be the Lock up converter? I think it is. Anyone have any ideas? I'm despirate!
Mike67 Feb 19th, 02, 11:30 PM I don't know what kind of car you have, but it sounds like the torque converter clutch solenoid is stuck on.

Randy Mosier Feb 20th, 02, 6:37 PM A little more would help. What make and model is this car, and what size engine and transmission is in it?
Mollyalexis Feb 21st, 02, 3:13 AM Ooops, I didnt realize that this was just a chevelle website. My car is a Pontiac 6000. Its a 1987, 4 cylander peice of junk. (Automatic) I called the guy at the transmission shop and he said that those cars are famous for those things going out. (If that is the problem)
BUMPERKING Feb 21st, 02, 4:41 AM SOUNDS LIKE YOUR TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH IS NOT UNLOCKING COMING DOWN TO A STOP. OPEN YOUR HOOD AND LOOK AT THE DRIVERS SIDE FRONT OF THE TRANS AND DISCONNECT THE BLUE CONNECTOR I BELIEVE IT HAS FOUR WIRES THIS SHOULD SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM, BUT YOU MIGHT SEE A DROP IN YOUR GAS MILEAGE AND IT WONT GO INTO OVERDRIVE. SORRY FOR THE CAPS, IAM NOT YELLING LET ME KNOW HOW YOU MAKE OUT
Mollyalexis Feb 22nd, 02, 12:36 AM My husband tried it, and it could be just luck, but it seems to run better. The true test will be when I drive it a little farther. It didnt even hesitate when I put on the brakes at all. I even came down on an exit and it was fine. I'm still paranoid about it. I'm afraid it will break down while I'm driving it. You really think that fixed it? Its not dangerous diconnecting that? You'll be my hero if it drives good tomorrow. Thanks alot.
BUMPERKING Feb 22nd, 02, 5:12 AM disconecting the converter clutch connector will not hurt it at all. like i said before the gas mileage will be affected and it wont go into overdrive.
Mollyalexis Feb 22nd, 02, 12:20 PM Just one more question. What does it mean to go into overdrive on an automatic. My husbands truck has and 0 with a D in the middle of it, but my car doesnt have anything on the gear thing for overdrive. Is it something the car does by itself? Does it mean you cant go past a certain speed? Sorry, I'm confused about this one and my husband doesnt know much about overdrive on an automatic. Thanks alot.
JIMK Feb 22nd, 02, 4:32 PM your car really didn't have od it had the lock-up torque converter to help gas milage so it is still a 3 spd with lock-up.and the fix they described was right on,i have disconnected many of these to fix the same problem.it only affects your gas milage.newer vehicles do have od now an actual 4th gear where yours did not.hope this helps.JIMK
Mollyalexis Feb 23rd, 02, 1:02 PM Thanks guys, it ran great yesterday. It did not die on me one time. I drove it like 50 miles yesterday and it did great. The only weird thing it did, was when i got home, as I was backing up, the oil light came on. My husband checked the oil and it was full. Who knows, could be a weird oil light. The car is ancient and was put together by my husband, his uncle, and his grandpa. None of which are mechanics, but they had a book. Haha! Like I said, thanks again. You guys are my hero's!
