hopefully someone of you guys can help me out with my choice.. I know u can!
here's the set up:
20's up front with a 2 inch drop spindal and 1 inch lower spring.

? = will I have problems with ground clearance w/ this stance?
? = what about down the line, when I want to have the car on airbags? (shorties or long)
? = I hear people say shorties performance wise are like stock, then I hear that the only difference between shorties in about 6 less horse power?

The reason am considering to go w shorties in the first place is the bags( down the line) and Its easier to install..
(my old long header had to be bend a little bit, and I hear nightmare stories all the time of long headers hitting the cross member, or unevenly longer on one side then the other)
let me know.

I have a 66 el camino with 327 and the mid length headers that dump at the rear. Works real good and the pipes don`t hang down like the headers.

Do yourself a favor and get rid of the wheel wells.

I'm not sure I have seen anything with 20" wheels that had clearance problems unless it was jumping parking barriers... With that said, I have Hedman Elite 3/4 length on my low 64 wagon (15" rallys) and have no exhaust clearance problems.

I run the Hedmans too- If you want good ground clearance, they are the way to go. You won't lose too much power compared to full-length pipes but the ground clearance was more important to me. I've had too many collectors drag over the years on my lowered rides.

Check my pics- you'll see how nice they fit (although I dont' have wheelwells either...lol!) and I'd choose them again.

The only other option I'd consider would be custom-made Tri-Ys or something that could be tucked up nice and tight, but they'd be super expensive and I don't know if the investment would be worth the power gain.

Even if you bag it later, the Hedmans would still clear everything.

Just my 2k worth. I run shorties but extendedthe 3" collector 18". Then down to 2 1/2" on back. Gained around 50# torque in mid range. :hurray:

Sounds cool- Can we see a pic?

Did you extend the 3-inch head pipes back into an X-pipe or something similar? I've been considering doing something like this, and I'm curious to see what you did. I think I'll go with 3-inch pipes to an X-pipe, and then run the 3-inch pipes to the muffs and keep 2.5-inch tailpipes out of the mufflers, but I'm still on the fence.

i have hooker super comps on a 66 with air ride and they are not that bad at ride height, but deflated they are about an 1 inch off the ground

I have Hooker Super Comps, 18" in the front, 2" drop spindles, and a custom air bag set up. The Hookers lay on the ground when the car is aired out all the way.....

I don't have a better picture right now, but in this picture you can see the exhaust on the ground....what stops it from going lower is the cross member hitting the ground.

Oh, and yes, you'll definitely need to remove the inner fenderwells if you plan on running 20's.

E-mail me if you have any other questions. Bad66Chevelle454@aol.com
