This question is in regards to my 98 Chevy pickup with the Vortec 350. I've been noticing lately (past month or so)upon cold start the engine is awful squeeky, not like a belt whine but more like loud squeeky pulleys. Once it warms up the noise seems to dissipate a bit but it's still there. Is this a prelude to a failing waterpump or something else? The engine temp and everything have been fine with no leaks at all. Just an annoying noise.
Thanks in advance.

Could be the idler pulley for the serpentine belt. I have rarely heard a water pump squeak, but I have heard it. I would check the pulley first.

Also check your alt. my 95 make alot of noise, the colder it gets the more noise. I think mine is from the alt.

My 99 Tahoe with 72,000 miles on it does the same thing on cold mornings only. I replaced the tensioner and it stopped for a while. It started squealing again after about 5,000 miles, so I replaced the idler pulley. Still squealed. Replaced tensioner again and it quit squealing for a while, now it's squealing again.

Thanks for the responses, the truck only has 40,000 miles on it and seems to only do it during the cold weather starts. The past few days have been relativly warm for this part of the country and I have noticed I could barely hear the squeeking.
