: Bad bearings or Worse???

Today around lunch time, I was taking the Chevelle back to school and I noticed a hellish screeching coming from somewhere in the front of the car (pretty sure it was in the wheels). I was worried, but the worst part was that whenever I stop moving, the noise stops. At first I thought it might be my brakes, but the screeching occurs whenever the car is in motion. I had one of my friends come over and listen to the car to see where the noise was coming from and he said it sounded like I have either bad bearings (which is no big deal) or a vacuum problem, causing my brakes to grab. Can anyone offer some insight? THANKS,
Kris

Well, I could race you... but why would I waste half a tank of gas just to say "I told you so?"

I would look at the front wheel bearings first. While you're in there, look at the brakes. Keep in mind that noises can travel, that is, even though it sounds like it's coming from the front end, it could be coming from somewhere else. After checking the brakes and front wheel bearings, and if they check out okay, I'd give the driveline a look to see what shape the u-joints are in.

Sounds like I'm gonna end up doing that. Thanks for the input. The u-joints are pretty new thanks to me http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif, but who knows.

Any chance you've hit the wear indicator on the front brake pads? It's a formed thin metal tab one of the pads that squeels when it rubs the rotor. When it touches, the brakes are worn out.
