While breaking in my buddies rebuilt 454 we developed a leak of oil at the oil filter area,,,it appears the oil is coming from the place you screw the filter on. We changed to a new filter when we drained the oil but again on running the engine we get oil leaking. Are the 2 screws the only thing holding in the part that you screw the filter to? Has anyone ever had this part go bad? Can we change this part out and what is it called. Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes the two screws are the only thing holding that piece in.

Never had one go bad. It is aluminum or some cheaper steel. It shouldn't warp, but it does have a gasket between it and hte block.

you can change it out very easily. That part has stayed the same on both small block and big block motors from as early as 68 to as late as 89. Maybe even later, I can only tell what I KNOW to be true. I call it: Oil filter adapter" I'm sure GM carries them over the counter.

Be sure you run some oil on the filters rubber seal with your finger. helps it to seal better. hand tight should do it.

Also, be sure it is not your oil pressure sending unit. It's right above the filter and could trickly down onto it.
