How do you lube a sometimes noise speedomiter cable?
Also. I have a regular GMC over drive transmission in my SS 396 El Camino rather than the 400. It runs great but the speed is 20 miles off on the high side (70 means 50mph, etc). How do you correct this.
Last question. What is the correct color of the grill for a Tuxido Black w/white stripes SS 396.
Thanks. You fokes always solve our problems!!

to lube the noisey(meaning dry) speedo cable, reach under the dash and unscrew or otherwise disconnect it from the speedo head. Pull the inner core from the housing and with a rag soaked in solvent, clean the core thoroughly and then dry it with a clean, dry rag. There used to be a lubricant specially for speedo cables that came in a squeeze tube, but I guess for now, you will have to use lubriplate. Put a wad in your left hand(or your right if you prefer) and starting with the trans end shove it thru the lube and back into the cable housing, twisting it while you shove it. Try not to get any lube on the last two inches to that none of the lube gets in the speedo head. If I can be of any more help, repost here.

it has been my experience that the whole cable comes out with out too much trouble. if it is difficult to remove, you might have to take the cable loose from the trans, but that is not usually the case and to get it clean and lubricated, the whole inner core has to come out and be cleaned.

There are 3 speedometer related links at the bottom of this, http://links.chevelles.net/links/WorkShop/General_Info/ page. Between them you should be able to get the speedo reading correctly.
