: Oil Leak?
69chevelle396 Jan 12th, 02, 3:31 PM Just ran into a problem with my big block 69 chevelle. When i bought the car there was a small oil leak, looks like its been coming from the rear main, dripping down and burning off the headers. recently i moved away to college, and the car sat for a few weeks, when i came home, i changed the oil, it was nice and sludgy, now when the car revs up to between 3500 and 4000 rpms it starts to blow oil out of the dipstick tube, wondering if anyone could help.

69chevelle396 Jan 13th, 02, 9:52 AM thanks for the hints, i went ahead and checked them, first there is no breather in the valve covers, so i crossed that off the list, from the first significant blow out of oil, the engine was still down about a quart, still blew out the oil, and the pcv has got the sucking power it needs, talked to a friend, and he said that it might have been the oil filter i used, i took off a puralator filter, and replaced it with a fram filter, any thoughts on this?
MalibuJerry350 Jan 13th, 02, 11:06 AM One valve cover, usually the passenger side, should have a breather element. The other cover should have the PCV valve. As was stated earlier, the "blowby" from the dipstick is being caused by pressure in the crankcase. With a breather AND a PCV valve installed, fresh air will enter the crankcase through the breather and will draw contaminants out through the PCV valve, to be burned off during normal combustion.

69chevelle396 Jan 13th, 02, 11:54 AM alright, so if im reading this previous post, you are saying that if i replace the valve covers i have with a set with breathers, this could be a fix to the problem? i do have a set of mickey thompson valve covers i just purchased, that have a place for a breather, if you think this might fix the problem ill put them on immediately. thanks

Peter F. Jan 16th, 02, 10:34 PM If you have a PVC valve in one of the valve covers there should be a vent in the other one. Is there? You stated no vents in your first response.
Most people here recommend a PVC in one cover and a vent in the other as opposed to having 2 vents.

gatkins Jan 17th, 02, 10:37 AM I could be wrong about this, but I think on the Big Block motors you'll have this problem, but not necessarily on the Small Block. I think what you need to do is to get a good sealant, like silicon, and basically glue the tube into the block.
musclebuff Jan 19th, 02, 5:29 PM You need to have a PCV in one cover and a vent in the other to keep crankcase pressures down and to burn off condensation from within the crankcase. You can run a filtered vent or run it to the air cleaner bottom so that valve cover will get filtered air for the vent intake. Unfiltered air on that cover is like running no air cleaner.
Both valve covers closed will blow out seals and pop the dip stick for sure.
