Hi guys,

I just bought a 65 Elky with a hopped up 350 in it. Rumpety cam, Holley double pumper, headers, electric fans.

The water temp guage is all over the place. Driving around town in 70 degree weather, it will shoot from 180 to 220 in 3 seconds, stay there for two minutes and then suddenly drop back down to 180. It does not seem to be directly tied to speed, although it does climb when I am at a light. Turning on the fans often has little affect.

Here's the thing. The water temp guage is plumbed to the block right behind the #1 header tube. Is that the right place for it? I think the header is affecting the temp. I put some convoluted tubing and reflective tape around the sending line to protect it, but the problem persists.

Should I move the sending unit to the manifold?

Thanks,

Sounds like a bad ground or a bad sending unit. If its old, you might want to replace the sending unit as they are only a couple of bucks.

I don't think moving the unit would help. I've run the sending unit in both places(Head or intake) and I couldn't tell any difference.
