I a 71 El and took the cap off to clean the wires and may have put them back in the wrong order. Which is the number one plug on the distribtor cap, or how can you tell? It has a coil(?) in the cap and an extension off the side. The rotor goes in a clockwise direction-yes? Thanks!

You can just put the distrubutor in approximately the position you want it, turn the engine until you reach TDC on the #1 cylinder (make sure it's at the top of the compression stroke) and put the #1 wire on the post nearest to where the rotor is pointing. Then follow the others around the cap. Firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.
