Hi: I bought an Alumitech Radiator from Don last summer with 2 Curved Electric Spal Fans and loved it, since it cooled my 396 400HP Big Block with no problem. Now I need another Aluminum Radiator with an Electric Fan for my 283 Chevy II @ 275 HP. Problem is I don't love the roar that the twin Spal Fans create under the hood. Is anyone using a Single LARGE electric Fan for a SB 283/350 Engine...?
Don-Whats your take on this? Would one LARGE fan be any quieter than your 2 twin Spal Fans..? Also: Are straight plastic blades any quieter than curved ones..? I love your radiator but not the Fan noise...?

I run a single Spal 4200 CFM in my small block (350 ZZ430 Clone). Works fine and I have air. I use a 4 core radiator from Don. On the highway it runs so cold the fan does not ever come on. Only in stop and go traffic, pulling off the freeway after an extended run on a hot day, or on the track does it come on.
You could use a speed control module from Flexalite so that the fan speed will vary with radiator temperature; that will help the noise. I have one put have not put it on yet. Part# 31165-VSC

The other way to lower noise is to use a dual fan set up where you have two fans. One turns on a low temperature say 195 and the other turns on at 210. It is still noisy at 210 and above but that only occurs once in a while. Mid 80's Corvettes used this process with two different temps sensors. I can give you the part number of the higher temperature sensor if you are interested by private message ( I will have to go in the garage and get the box out).

Don: Nice hearing from you again. You might have the answer. The 16" paddle fan that you suggested says very low noise. Can you make me a direct fit 65 Chevy II Aluminum Radiator and attach this 16" paddle fan to it with a built in shroud? I will be running a SHORT water pump with it on my 283 so that will give me some extra room-Hopefully. What do you think..?
Would it be quieter than the twin spals? Would all this fit..?

Bob
you would need 7.5 inches from your cour support to water pump pully bolts .. this would give you at least 1/4 inch clearence
grab yout tape and a yard stick .

Don: I called a Spal Tech today and picked his brain about fans-There very helpful. His pick for my 283 is the 16" Curved Blade High Performance Fan. The noise deceibles are 70 which are the lowest of any Electric Fan on the market and produces 2070 CFM. It's only 3.39" deep and uses 18.5 amps. This may be the win win. It's on there web site. I will measure for clearance. Can you let me know a price for this hooked up to your radiator...
Thanks

The 16" should be plenty. I am using this one: http://www.flex-a-lite.com/auto/html/160_black_magic_s-blade.html
on my 377 small block and it keeps it cool in 95 degree weather, even during autocross runs. It's not real loud either, but noticeable.
