: How Strong are Factory 350 (or 327) Forged Cranks??
Cable Dec 21st, 04, 1:44 AM Hey guys, I am seriously considering using some type of force induction on my next SBC for my little 280z. Most likey a twin-turbo setup.
I recently picked up a early '70's 4 bolt main 350 with a '1182' forged crank inside. At first I was thinking that I would just sell the crank instead of using it because normally I build 383 strokers.
Today, I started thinking that maybe I don't need the extra cubies (or torque) for the little Z and because its going to be forced induction anyway, maybe I'll just build a 350.
Anyway, how much can one of these cranks handle both HP/TQ and max RPM? I don't think the motor will see above 6500 RPM, but I thought I should ask anyway. I am sure I'll be using SCAT 6.0" H-beam rods, if that makes a difference.
Thanks guys!!
CNC BLOCKS N/E Dec 21st, 04, 7:44 AM We have bought a few of the Crower and Kings 1182 crankshafts with an 1/8 radius on the rod and main journals and they rate them at under 500 horse and your radius is less then that.
In 28 years of building engines we have seen many 1182 cranks in 2 pieces if your going to be under 450 horse you should be fine. We have sold a few of those 4130 Scat cranks and have been working out fine they and we sell them just under $500 that may be a better option.
Scott_68_SS Dec 21st, 04, 8:20 AM I've heard reference to stock forged cranks out lasting the stock block in turbo apps.
I was told by a builder in LA that does lots of turbo motors that a stock crank was fine for the 550-600hp level. From what I can tell, rpm is what kills an 1182 crank. Not the power itself.
Meaning you here of crank breakage in drag/circle engines.
Now I could have said no way it will work & oh, btw, do you want to sell it?
So, do you want to sell it?
And from what I've heard, you shouldn't use a 6" rod in a 3.75 stroke boosted app.
Have you been hanging out at TM?
69ralleygreen Dec 21st, 04, 8:36 AM Like cnc blocks n/e said the radius are not great on chevy cranks and they break, The machine shop i use told me that less than a year ago to, He recommended crower or callies, So i bought a callies, But my dad raced for ten years with a stock L88 crank in his race car shifting at 8000 rpm...mike
10sec69 Dec 21st, 04, 8:50 AM FWIW... I have close to 10 years on my stock crank. Roughly 625 HP, shifting at 6000-6200. It can be done. But I will say it crosses my mind every time I race (not all that often these days).
If you have the money I'd say get the peace of mind an aftermarket crank will provide. If and when mine comes back apart I will be retiring my "old faithful."

It is for sale, I really wasn't sure what it is worth though.

hoffbug Dec 21st, 04, 3:02 PM If you are intent on using a stock crank Id have that puppy mag'ed before it went in my engine. You never know how many "cycles" are on used stuff.

Nickel333 Dec 21st, 04, 4:04 PM Well, the old forged cranks must be somewhat strong. A friend runs one that he bought regound at a swap meet, and he has 6 years of 7,500-8,000 RPM blasts on it along with probably 40,000+ street miles. I dont know if its an 1182 though...i think his is the 1052 steel??
pdq67 Dec 21st, 04, 6:05 PM What, mw worry??
My old junk 301 with an old reground '55, 265", 3" crank in it and who knows what 283" rods used ta see above 7,000rpm a LOT.......
And with the little-bitty stock, 11/32" bolts to boot....

Cable Jan 18th, 05, 11:43 PM What about factory 327 cranks?
How strong are they in the large journal form?
