Very low budget....
Stock 400 olds (not mine)
4spd, 3.08, dual exh is only mod.
Has a 6210 holley on it now, but needs 71's so far to get it rich enough at cruise.
I told him it would be easier to go to a QJ than get the drill bits out to make the holley right.
He swears it doesn't have a vac leak.
What jets, rods, hangers etc to start out with?
Prefer not to go buy a kit if the parts are laying around the shop...

you don't get jets and rods in a kit anyway. post the number of the Q-jet, we can probably find the correct jets and rods to start with. There is no right jet/rod pair for all Q-jets, they vary a lot depending on the original application of the carb. If you don't have any reason to suspect the stuff hss been changed from stock for the carb I would just start there.

99% of the time the rods/jets that came with the carb will be fine for a street application. Especially true on the primary side. On the secondary side, I run a "G" hanger with a pair of "BG" rods.

Thanks guys,
I guess the 1 and only QJ I tweeked on was in that 1%. 85 4mv on a 454. Went to replace a exh manifold and it was white on the inside.
Ran a lot better when I went up 2 #'s on the jets per Jennings Dyno. Got 12mpg on the hiway too ...
I'll have him pull it a part and see what's up with it. Just something he has laying around.
