: Body Shop in the South Sound
Chevelle28 Nov 30th, 08, 12:37 AM I'm looking for to get my 72 Chevelle painted; did most of the body work in HS with my dad. It's pretty straight but I would like the lil bit of fiberglassing we did replaced w/ welded patches (Since I have more money now then i did in HS :-) ).
Not looking for a show finish, just a clean looking solid paint job so I can get it put back together as I'd like to use her as a driver; like once a week and weekend cruises and stuff like that. Looking the Lakewood area for someone who can do in 3 or 4 months for something other then 10,000 or more which has been the typical quotes from the photos I bring them.
Thanks!
Chris

65lkey Nov 30th, 08, 12:43 AM screwy designs painted my car, he got it done in 3 months and it ran me $4000 out the door. he's down here in Olympia and only goes by word of mouth. lmk if you'd be interested I can send you his number
RAMBO Nov 30th, 08, 1:25 AM call/visit scott at 6th ave autobody... in tacoma a few miles from the bridge.
They did my car 2 years ago... does great work, and will work with you to get the car to the level you want... but you do need to be aware of what the work really does entail so you are not suprised by the price. Talk with him about the "Level" of quality you expect, and that you are NOT expecting show quality for under $10k, and i think they will be able to make you pretty happy.
Give them a call and or go visit them, tell scott that "Rambo" the guy with the silver elcamino sent you, he'll remember me.

Take a pic at my signature to see the work the did on my car.
kettbo Nov 30th, 08, 1:49 AM Chris,
Welcome to TC and TCNW!
What does the body shop on post want? Al's?
I have a pal Scott that may be able to work on your car....do the serious body repairs
He's a serious Chevy guy specializing in 55 and 57 Chevys.
I'm Army retired out of 3/2 Inf Bde, live in Lakewood behind Western State. I work a few days a week at the Schuck's Auto Parts on Steilacoom Blvd. My pics below. Nearby is 'propest' John with a 72 Chevelle and a 70 Elky, both beautiful cars.
Tell me more about your car....

Well Al didn't want to give a quote unless I rent a trailer and bring the car to him; but he said of the chevelles/classics he has in there now they're running $10K for one and $17K on another that he's replacing rear quarters. Plus he's going down for 3 weeks while he gets a new paint booth and he's only got 3 guys working for him so he figured around 6 months to do it and I've only got 7 or less so I can risk him not finsihing before I have to move agan.
She's a 1972 Chevelle mabilu 350; pretty plan and stock. My dad bought it when I was 8 and we worked on it in HS. Just needed paint then I went college out of state and then went on active duty so 13 years later I went go it from the hay barn; She need some tender luving care now so I'm redoing the interior again due to mice damage. My bro and have it running again. Trying to find a place to do paint on a classic is alot harder then I expected.
sevent1nomad Nov 30th, 08, 2:50 AM I would rather rattle can my car pink than let Als :sad:touch my car ,trust me I used to do work there, not by choice either.Call D&D auto body 253-471-4789 on monday and tell them craig gave you there number they are in south tacoma, thats who painted my car.
RAMBO Nov 30th, 08, 3:12 AM Well Al didn't want to give a quote unless I rent a trailer and bring the car to him
No offense, but i seriously doubt any respectable body guy will be able to give you a quote without seeing the car.... And if they do, i certainly wouldn't trust the number to stay the same from start to finish!!

I understand that but I like to check them out, see the shop and talk to them before I rent a trailer and drag it all over the place; My problem as been most of them look at the photos and say oh atleat $10k or $12K to do that to start. Sorry, I don't want to spend that much on a paint job for a 3rd car with a kid on the way and wife leaving the Army.
I'd like to check them out and get a ball park before I arrange to the car transported to a body shop or two to have quotes worked up.

What about something like maaco? Just do up some of the body work yourself take it apart bring it there, have them spray it, bring her back in about a week or less probably. Probably no more than 1K. And youd be on the road in no time.
It might not be perfect but its worth it if time and $ are a factor in my books, and you wont be as pissed if you get a scratch or door ding on it.
66SSFan Nov 30th, 08, 11:05 AM Maaco's paint products are good, it's the prep and body work that sucks. Find someone like Kettbo's guy to do the tough stuff, primer and block it out and take it to Maaco for the color. I have two friends that have done this, one is a daily driver and the other is '67 442 and both paint jobs have held up very well after many years. My friend with the '67 had them use a base/clear system and put a couple coats of clear on the car so he could sand/buff out the final coat and get rid of any orange peel and it turned out awesome. He paid around $1,600 I think.

That is more or less what I was suggesting with Scott (near Pierce College)....
Perhaps arrange for Scott and I to visit the car, he tells you what he thinks...
He more or less retired this year from remodeling homes and flips cars and parts for pocket money....Scott can build a chassis, swap quarters, put 'modern' front ends on old cars, tilt front ends on 55 gassers, etc, etc.
So, showing a Chevelle some TLC should not be too large a job for him,,,then he can recommend a painter if he is not interested. Just not sure about his time and space availability
Local guy Dennis does a lotta work with a local Maaco. Their paint is pretty good, your prep work prior, and your removal or taping of trim is the key.
OutCast Nov 30th, 08, 1:42 PM Just drag it up here, Chris. Bring a box of beer and I'll shoot it for you. I've got an excellent spray booth. :D

JK, I would also recommend Maaco. That's where I'll be taking this lump of mine once I talk a couple buddies into helping me fill, fiddle and block sand it out. It's all about what you expect from your car. If you want a show car, it's going to be huge coin. If you want a fun car that looks ok, go Maaco and spend the remaining 9-14 grand on speed parts. ;)
Good luck.
kettbo Nov 30th, 08, 5:51 PM Good advice from Canada!
justkyle Nov 30th, 08, 8:10 PM I took my 69 to a body shop in oakville, just outside of rochester. He replaced both rear quarters for 1300 cash. I supplies the metal. I will try to find their number tomorrow for ya. They may work you a decent deal.
propest Dec 3rd, 08, 1:02 AM nice paint for cheap is right up my alley.
kettbo Dec 3rd, 08, 1:30 AM nice paint for cheap is right up my alley.
Well there ya have it, Propest John stepping up to the plate!:hurray:
Save some time for my Elky old man!
Silver is already taken...one of my favorite colors! Can't have two silver beauties in one town!
Anybody like code 45 Green Mist? I think it would look SHARP with my vinyl top, and the black hood stripes....
RAMBO Dec 3rd, 08, 2:06 AM Anybody like code 45 Green Mist?
Just say no george... you already got rid of the ugly wheels, don't take a step backwards now...
Juhosaphat Dec 3rd, 08, 2:30 AM http://www.ncsdc.com/TechnicalPages/Paint/greenmist.jpg
Not that color green mist is it? IMO George, green isn't really an Elky color. The blue looks good, or maybe white with orange stripes. There you go. Just like those old 69 Camaro's. Can't remember exact model. RS/SS?

Put the right rims on there, might have something going
propest Dec 3rd, 08, 10:50 AM geo. whats your cowl tag org. paint code? always a good place to start. if you want something else thats fine. its your truck! maybe some guys could post suggestions for a good color for ya. i like orange w/ white stripes my self. but what to do on the tailgate stripe, black? cuz white would be wrong im sure. i need to stop by and help ya with a plan one of these days. what ya up to thurs. afternoon? suppossed to be nice out, i might go terrorizing the streets after work. john
RAMBO Dec 3rd, 08, 12:05 PM My favorites for your car...
1970 Fathom Blue
1969 Lemans blue
1972 muselaine blue
1970 black cherry (also 1996 GM DCM (Dark Cherry metallic) from the Imp SS color chart would look sweet)
1970 Shadow Grey
Black horizontal stripe accross the tailgate between moldings
Hood stripes, no hood stripes, all depends what you want to do. personally i think hood stripes are overdone, my 70 didn't have them and I was glad to be a little different from the crowd.
Keep the vinyl top, they look good, less body work & paint required.
BTW- don't do what I did and plan to do the bed later- take it to a sand blaster before you do any bodywork at all, have them blast the bed clean, then clean the sand out of the quarters- THEN have the bodywork and paint done. Even if you are going to linex the bed, still worth it to blast it first and get rid of any rust/paint buildup.
kettbo Dec 3rd, 08, 12:13 PM John,
the cowl tag code is 45 45 Green Mist
I have seen a few cars in it......looks sharp.
Thing is, it has already been repainted the blue.....
By the age/condition of the paint and body, I figure the blue, the cowl hood, and a few other things were done 10-15 years ago.....and the old vinyl top.
No, not locked-in on the Green Mist......just interesting.....
Green Mist is not a favored color like RESALE RED
The Blue is pretty close to a Chevy blue color (forget the name).
Who knows.......
Yes, free THURS, let's light em up! I have a full tank of midgrade!
Got a video camera?
kettbo Dec 3rd, 08, 12:22 PM Ben,
Just before I did the engine swap, I started on the bed. OMG. I stopped after a few hours. The bed has ripples, so does the smuggler's hole cover, tailgate, etc. Planning a new bed floor, one new under bed cross brace (a rust hole in the vert part of it), new cover for the smuggler's hole. Then some massage of the wheel tubs......
I have a spare tailgate and some spare doors. The current door bottoms are rusty and some rust inside...maybe just reskin the spare doors
I do have a 3-pod Monte dash coming, new top plate for the console, new carpet and seat covers etc in the garage....and If I quit buying go-fast parts.....might even get me a 200R4 built for a better 1st gear plus OD for cruising.
66SSFan Dec 3rd, 08, 12:41 PM The original color sounds cool, it would be very different and would look good with black stripes and the black vinyl top with the induction hood too. At least you could pull into a large cruise and be different from everyone else and be able to say it's the original color.

kettbo Dec 4th, 08, 12:40 AM Craig does have the market for Placer Gold and black....
There sure is a LOT of color on his wagon....
FourEightyNine Dec 4th, 08, 12:45 AM Placer gold with black stripes are already taken:D
:yes:glad you dont live in my town I might have to do something about that:D
Yours looks a little lighter than what my factory color looks like to me anyways, judging by the areas of my car that havent been touched yet.
Chevelle28 Dec 4th, 08, 1:58 PM Thanks for the ideas and responses. Life is a bit busy for me at the moment w/ finals in my Masters program and my wife being overdue and poping any minute. So I haven't gotten much of a chanceto follow up w/ anyone. So I thought I should atleast link some photos... I need to take some new ones now that all the chrome and glass is gone too.
Both rear quarters in the lower corner behind the wheel well have been fiberglasses due to rust eating through the fender. I was thinking new sheetmetal was a better choice.?.?.?.?.... This is a little bit of fiberglass in the front fenders behind the wheels as well. The yellow batch on the door was there when we sanded it down and appears not to be very deep.
Anyway heres the link to the photos I do have of it atm
