i searched but couldn't find the answer. I need to repair the cowl under the windshield on a 70.. I need to temporarilly remove the VIN tag to weld in a new piece as it is rusted. What do I do about the star rivits. Is this a problem? Are they available?

Replacing the rivets in the vin tag is frowned upon. I think having all the neccessary papers: current owners card ,bill of sale ,title you should be able to have a law enforcement officer present to witness the vin reriveted in place and it all be legal.

No offense Ron, but would you really call the Police to witness you're working on a car? I'm certain they wouldn't send an Officer to witness that act, and even if one did, what type incident report will they write up? That he witnessed you changing your VIN? You can get anyone to witness it and have it notorized.

Even if an Officer did witness it and wrote a report, what would occur down the line? For example, in five years if that VIN tag is challenged, the report that was written up would have to be backed up by verbal testimony, which will be tough to do if the Officer has moved on to greener pastures.

Perhaps it could be noted at the main office of Motor Vehicles or the State Police. I would contact the Division of Motor Vehicles and try and get the correct answer.

Another way of changing it is cut out a piece of the existing cowl with the VIN tag, and reweld it into the new one.

A police officer would not have a jurisdiction in this area, the MVA or DMV would. I agree with John R. get them involved prior to removing the tag. Here in NC they are really targeting 35 year old plus cars for fraud. Better safe than sorry.

I meant an official present so it was all legal like. Just wasn't clear of the specifics.

I tried to contact someone regarding a vin # here in IL. Was sent in circles.........

DMV said "We can't help you, call the state police".

State police said "Not us, call your local police".

Local police said "That is something you need to contact the DMV or state police about". :p

As with any government agency you have to go up the ladder to get answers. The license plate issuers won't know what to do, you need to talk to a lead inspector for the district or state.
