: 1970 chevelle 12 bolt rearend
lloydt2442 Nov 27th, 08, 8:02 PM I went out this evening and tried finding the axle codes on my 12 bolt. I couldn't find anything. I referred to this http://www.chevelles.com/years/70/70rearcodes.html
to find them but still couldn't find anything. The rearend is still under the car so with that being said are the codes on top of the axle tubes where you can't see them? where exactly are they at?
Thanks,
Lloyd

Not Chevelle shown ,but same location.
lloydt2442 Nov 27th, 08, 8:28 PM I found it! it reads.... CRV 1017B2
so its 3.31 positraction January 1st, 1970 Baltimore plant and I'm guessing the 2 is second shift?
lloydt2442 Nov 27th, 08, 8:31 PM does it have a serial number on it that you can match to the cars vin?
DougA Nov 27th, 08, 8:39 PM Vin #s on engine and trans, not rears. Also believe your date is Oct. 17th.
Mike Nov 27th, 08, 8:39 PM No S/N.

UM ,your showing 71 ss 454 chevelle convertible in your sig.

hmm possibly. shouldn't there be a year on it though?
Mike Nov 27th, 08, 9:35 PM Not really.
Have you found the casting number yet ?
3969278NF =1970-1972
That'll narrow the year range down somewhat.
Also ,as I asked ,how close is the rear build date to the car's build date?
lloydt2442 Nov 27th, 08, 9:46 PM Not really.

I haven't looked for the casting. And as far as the build date on my car I'm not sure. When I got my car the cowl tag was missing but I am trying to get a hold of the owner of the car before the last guy to see if he might have it but I haven't had any luck. Thats why I asked if it had a serial number on it to match to the vin, so I would know the build date of my car. But if there is no way to match the rearend to it, then I dont know.

well than... oct.17th it is! thanks for the correction! :beers: now would that be in 69 or 70? that would be to late to be a 70 car wouldnt? so 69??
DougA Nov 28th, 08, 8:42 AM Not sure Lloyd, but there are guys here that can narrow down your build date by your vin# depending on the plant it was built at.Someone here has a list of Chevelle vin#s where they started and ended each month.Hopefully they will read this and reply.Good luck.
DougA Nov 28th, 08, 8:47 AM From Dales site, http://www.chevellestuff.com/1970/plant_prod_no.htm
DaleM Nov 28th, 08, 9:42 AM Check the housing casting date in one of the center section webs.
http://www.chevellestuff.com/qd/generic_rear_axle_info.htm
Probably late Sept or early Oct, 1969 date if it was assembled on Oct 17 for the 1970 model year.
DougA Nov 28th, 08, 11:34 AM No,my original rear is CRV0120B1, 3:31 posi,Jan.20,Buffalo,1st shift.Car build date Feb. 1st.
I'm wrong as normal,Dales right,should be a casting date.Mines L229.Dec 22,69
lloydt2442 Nov 28th, 08, 11:05 PM so with my vin number you can narrow it down and get an idea of when the car was built?
DaleM Nov 28th, 08, 11:14 PM so with my vin number you can narrow it down and get an idea of when the car was built?Yep, you can too. Figure an average of 20 working days a month...

cool site! I will have to go check my vin number tomorrow sometime and narrow it down! thanks for all the help guys!
lloydt2442 Nov 30th, 08, 8:54 PM my vin is 136370k162294
so if I'm doing this right the car was built somewhere between January and February of 1970. so if the rear end was oct.17 can it be possible to be the original?
DaleM Nov 30th, 08, 10:01 PM KC sequence number 162294 would put it early February. The October 17, 1969 date is on the edge of the 'acceptable' range of 90-100 days or so. It's does seem a long time for a fairly common rear end to be around before being installed but documented differences in time are out there.
